I am trying to learn something here and I am by no means an expert at grading higher grade coins.

But what is keeping this coin from being a low MS grade?

Please be specific pointing out the particular blemish(s) that is holding it back.

Thanks,

Wow! That's some nice pictures, it captured details that I didn't see from other cameras.
Please tell me what brand and model is it.

And by the way, very sharp Buffalo nickel. I don't know how to grade these either, but my guess AU-58.
Minor circulation, shows rim having some contact.
Maybe light dipping, it show a little dullness, could be lighting.

Nothing too special about the camera. It's a Panasonic Lumix FZ28. I took the pictures directly under a bright light in macro mode, using a 2 megapixel mode so I wouldn't have to crop the picture down afterwards.

As to the coin, I don't believe it has ever been cleaned or treated in any way. I think it was accumulated around the time it was first in circulation, and then just stored loose since then with a bunch of other coins from the same era. It looks to have basically the full mint luster, except for those brown streaks, which look darker in the pictures than with the naked eye. Are those something that can occur naturally with nickels? Or from being stored loose with silver or copper coins?

Wow, that's a very nice coin. At least AU-58, but it has a shot at MS depending on what the luster looks like- seems kind of washed out from the photos. There are very few blemishes on this coin- if it has good luster, this is easily an MS64.
Rest in Peace

It doesn't look like there is wear on the cheekbone which is the first place to wear, so I will say MS-65 at least from pics.
Doesn't look to have wear on the high point of the buffalo either. Possibly 66 if the surfaces are really immaculate.
It's a very nice coin and very well struck.

Thanks Cyclone for the tips. I will check out pricing on this Panasonic.

I assume storing with other coins can't really effect the coins appearance, toning is more of an environmental condition. And what material is used to store it in.

sorry to be responding so late to this-been working too much!!
In my opinion, this is definately a MS coin-I always look at the reverse first-since Buffalo nickels use the reverse die for striking (unlike most U.S. coins)any wear would show up there first. The high point of the reverse is the hipbone of the buffalo-if that edge is rounded, its not ms. Also look at the left leg, and the head for wear. On the obverse its a little trickier-the cheek, the hairbraid, and the ribbons beside the date. Not sure whats going on with those ribbons-maybe lack of striking, or slight wear? Beacause of that, I'm going with Ms-64 or 65-a 66 coin can't have that.
