I have a chance to pick up Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of US & Colonial Coins.

Does anyone have this book, if so do they use it ... like it?
Rest in Peace

Breen was considered to be one of the top researchers in his day, and his books highly prized. He's also hugely controversial, and some of his reasearch has been questioned.

I actually met him, and he's quite a character and very intelligent. He also was too fond of young boys.

it is an excellent book with ALLOT of information, last time I checked it was a little high though. I remember a year or so ago someone posted the whole thing online and may have gotten in trouble for doing so

Original Cover price was $135 I think. Its a comprehensive volume of early and up to the time that was published.

I was stationed in the Wash DC area when this book came out .. I wanted to pick it up .. but I thought
it was high then .. I think the cover price was $100.00

The copy I am looking at is from a local collector, like new for $70.00.

Sort of wondering other what information other collectors might be getting from this book ..
or just using it as a general reference.

$70 is a great price for that ginormous book. Even if you do not want it for yourself, you could easily sell it on ebay and make some extra money.

Good book - yes...but it's very outdated. There is a lot of good information in it, but there is also a lot of information that is now known not to be good in it too. Best thing to do is use it as a loose guide, then research further when you think you might have found something. A lot has happened in numsimatic research over the years since that book was published.

$70 is a no-brainer for a book like that...get it! You'll probably never see it for that cheap again.

At $70 BUY IT! Typical price for this book now is between $250 and $300. I've owned two copies and I do still refer to it. I just wish the book had been bound better. I USE my books and both copies began falling apart quickly. They didn't use a sewn binding so I'm not sure if I can get it rebound or not. If I had a chance at another copy at $70 though, I'd jump on it.
