I have three different collections going:
1. Morgan, with about 100 of them attributed VAMs--most coins are raw.
2. ASE's MS and PR, about 1/2 raw

3. Early gold, Gold Eagles and Buffalos.

Soooo.. I am assuming that price books are out of date when published. Please give me three best books (maybe four) that will give me the best grasp on grading.

Will VAMs need their own "series" of books?

Thanks,

Seth

I can address the Morgans, but I'll leave the others to those who have more of a clue than I.

From a strict grading standpoint, a VAM attribution means nothing. The grade is the grade regardless of variations.

For pricing, nothing in print keeps up with any coin issue, except in the most general way. Your best bet for VAM's is VAMworld; under their "Resources" link is contact information for VAMview, a quarterly publication listing recent sales data for the more collectable VAM's.

The two "must have" grading books on my shelf are Photograde by James Ruddy and How to Grade US Coins by James Halperin.

Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins

Some would say that it's too inaccurate to use and others swear by it. It's an incredible compendium.
