Hi,

Did anyone see that 1921 50 cent piece on ebay a couple of weeks ago?
It was certified as 'genuine', and was housed in a NCS holder. Bidding made it up to $15000, and the reserve wasn't met.
Did this coin not reach its reserve because of the controversy surrounding the NGC/NCS holders?

Nothing to do with the holder.Nobody was willing to pay more than 15G for a problem coin that was probably VG.

Being labeled only "Genuine" makes it difficult to determine a value without some understanding why it couldn't be graded. Nowadays NGC would accept the coin and give a "Details" grading. Perhaps this coin was damaged and specifically restored by NCS.
I couldn't find the NCS slab ID in the NGC registry. Does that registry have NCS coins?

Looking at the coin I'd give it a VG-F grading. At a 50% discount to trend, due to the unspecified issue that prevents grading, that would put a trend value of $20,000. But, buying a huge ticket item on ebay without being able to get some opinions, is foolish. So, I think anyone willing would expect an exceptional discount. But the $15K was still below the reserve price.

Charlton has the 1921 .50 cents at, $35,000 in VG, so I Think it may be a little inflated.

Ouch. What was the "grade"? You'd think he'd have called ICCS to check out the pedigree.

I have directed the seller of this coin to the Canadian Numismatic Company to have them sell it threw one of there auctions (Torex or RCNA in 2011). I guess we will have to wait and see if it happens. The owner of the coin I was told is a filthy rich American that owns railroads/trains in the U.S. He owns many of the rarest U.S coins and a lot of Canadian coins.
