96-P Jefferson ... Double Clip PMD?

nickelsearcher Moderator United States 15432 Posts	Posted 03/26/2011 10:56 am I pulled this XF40 1996-P Jefferson from a roll last night. I believe (for reasons explained below) that it is PMD. Sooo ... the coin weighs 4.96 grams ... right on target weight of 5.00 grams. The lack of any significant weight loss is clue #1 that the 'clips' are not a lack of material. I observe that the rim upset is complete through the area of the clips (both obverse and reverse) and that the legends flow around the clip areas. Seeing as the 'clips' are 180 degrees apart ... coupled with the observations above ... leads me to the conclusion that someone somehow squeezed this coin with a convex set of tools to create the two clips. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 03/26/2011 11:19 am Correct. The damage left the rims in tact which would not be the case for a incomplete planchet. That said ... perhaps I can do some terminology learning as well ... I'm studying hard to use the proper terms .... so help me with this ... coop wrote ... I associate the devices with Jefferson portrait and Monticello. Appears to me the devices are fine ... but the legend is indeed distorted at the location of the vise squeeze job.
