I happen to be tighter than the skin on a hot dog when it comes to dealing. I don't want to sell, trade, or give away my best specimen of any part of my collection and regret it.
My collection and sets comes first and it takes a lot of work as you guys all might know to catalog and track a sizable collection.
I am just as tight with a hundred dollar coin as I am with a one dollar coin. I always collected by keeping the best and was OK with letting go of the rest. I used the proceeds if any to add back onto the top end of my collection.

You guys must know wheezydog by now, always saying someday I am going to have a sale of my duplicate nickels, and on occasions I have a contest with them or auctions but for the most part, the parting with my duplicates has been awfully slow.

I don't need them all, I don't even want them all but it is so difficult to set up and go through them that it has been taking me years to sort and cull. I have made a lot of progress but have a ways to go.

I want to be able to pass on some nice coins down the road, whether they be prizes or for cash and trade but I am just going to have to plod on working my way through and sorting.

I have people come right out and ask me for certain dates, some even give me a list, I wish it were that easy to just go through the 2x2 boxes and pull your request but I have to get through it first with the magnifying glasses and compare.

So bear with me. There will be a day when my set of Jefferson's is photographed, my nice investment duplicates are set aside, and my extras get put out there for others to enjoy but until then, I apologize for not being able to keep up with requests from my good CCF friends.

I just wonder if anyone else ever gets overwhelmed by this sort of thing?

I hear ya' Wheezy! I'm always adding to my copper cents, new quarters, upgraded Walkers, upgraded Morgans, more or different Type coins. I keep telling myself "next Winter when it's too cold outside" then the next winter comes and I'm searching through new rolls or adding to it in other ways & never get around to culling the dups.

One of these days......

Wheezydog,

"Overwhelmed at times"...Yes.

To try to be a Collector and an Investor is very difficult for me at times. My series of abundance is Lincoln Cents. I must have 500lbs of copper cents, half of which are wheaties either categorized in tubes by year and mm, 2x2ed, or stored in glass containers by decade's, with grades ranging from AG to MS65+...and of course my main series collection. I have no idea what I will do with all of them. They are not eating anything and the floor hasn't collapsed...yet. So..idkno?

My investments are always moving. My money is always moving. I figure as long as I buy right, I will be okay, and time has proven this theory.

From the spike in gold and silver in the past months, yesterday I was able to buy a lot of pieces for my collections that I have been so patiently waiting for, at a local auction.

If you need a hand give me a shout and I will come up with some 50 gal drums and a coal shovel and we can sort those Jeffersons...and maybe do a little fishing. :D

true my friend, I have thousands of coins, but still not able to catalog them and arrange them in order. Work pressure is too great. Very little time to attend to the coins. But I will sort them out at the earliest.

warm wishes.

I have the same problem. Everytime I try to sit down and put some order to them, seperate the duplicates. Something always comes and I put it off until later and of course later has yet to come around. It's been this way for the past 5 years. And my collection is starting to get out of hand. If only I could take a year off from work. I might be able to get it all done.

Be carefull of what you wish for. There is a lot of people that USED to say that and then got layed off from work. Now spending all their time looking for a job.
Then too, not long ago I came down with Stage 4 Cancer. Got my year off too but with surgeries and Chemo. Not able to even think of coins then.
Occationally I run into another problem with excessive coins. For example with 12 Mercury dime Albums and all in progressively better grades, if I find a really great one for set #1, the problme starts. I put that in set #1, the one in #1 goes to #2. The one in #2 goes to #3 and on and on and on. Handling each coin carefully, this really takes time. Worst part is I've been thinking of starting additional Albums of those.

Agree, it's overwhelming....which is why I keep reducing and reducing...see my monthly sales threads. LOL Now, I'm getting tired of selling them, it's a lot of work.

Personally, I keep playing around with the idea of seriously reducing down to only the most valuable coins....maybe a 100 or less and giving up this "complete set" stuff. A complete collection is cool, but it's more of a problem for my family when I kick the bucket. They would be better served by having very few, high-quality, mostly slabbed coins to deal with when I die. My kids/wife have zero interest in collecting so I'm sure they'd sell most of my stuff....and that scares me since they know nothing. LOL

I think I'm going to keep on my selling path. The older I get, the more my coin philosophy changes....like you said...too many coins and too little time.

I suppose it's a problem a lot of people would like to have. I am grateful, I won't be taking anything with me when I go, nor would I want to. Well, maybe that one .....

It's hard letting go, wheezy, I know that feeling. But for the sake of my estate, I had to pare down to 1 completed set, of Washingtons, Franklins and Jeffersons clearly identified in a album, while the rest (duplicates, incomplete sets) were labeled in 2x2s and disposed of either online or to trusted dealers. Keep things simple, because those that come after you may not be bothered with knowing the value of what they receive.

One of my favorite biblical quotes comes to mind: "Lord, teach us to understand we all have to die sometime, that we become wiser in our lives" (Psalm 90,12).

Every single year I make the same New Year' Eve Resolution. Get rid of at least one item a day, all year long. I've been saying this for many, many, many years. Last Sunday my Son visited me for a day from where he lives. Hasn't been here in a long time. First words were "Hey, Dad, I thought you were going to get rid of all this stuff"
To him nthing changed. Why should it, nothing did change.
Getting rid of a coin is like getting rid of an old Ink Pen, and old Watch, favorite shoes, etc. All this STUFF sort of becomes part of you as you get old.
