I was watching this auction on ebay and trying to understand the economics.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...52FwwTk%253D

I read that Morgans are 90% silver and Peace dollars are .77304 troy oz silver. Can someone help me understand calculating the melt value of these coins?

Thanks very much.

They both have the same content.

Multiply .7735 * current spot (37.08) = $28.68

If you do a search for silver calculators, there are many on the web. I tried posting one in particular that I like and use, but the mods didn't appreciate it.

OK, so the winner paid about $3.35 over melt per coin. I guess that's not too bad. Certainly one could expect to sell the coins and make that up.

FYI-
old pre 1965 coins have a little less silver in them per dollar than an actual dollar. .715 is the accepted amount to include a little wear, but the actual is a little over .72 ounce per $1 face value (10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 halves)
