I saw three coins in an up coming Heritage auction. They are all graded PCGS Genuine. Would it have been better to submit them to NGC for grading and attribution, before putting them in the auction?
I say attribution because the 1892 cc is definitely a mid strike VAM-10A
I Could not figure out how to include a link. I have included the auction number and lot numbers.
The auction # is 1154
1892-cc lot # 259001 1878 $3 lot # 259003 1942/1 10c lot # 259002
I hope this makes sense

Im looking at a auction with that same PCGS Genuine label. I'm very new to this but my guess is that, if I was a seller Id rather sell a coin that says on the slab "Genuine Not Gradable" from PCGS as opposed to "AU Cleaned" from NGC.

Note that any PCGS coin marked "Genuine not Gradable" that includes ".92" in the serial number is cleaned. PCGS does not use words to describe why the coin was not graded but the do encode the reason into the decimal portion of the number:
91 Artificial Color 92 Cleaning 93 Planchet Flaw 94 Altered Surfaces 95 Scratch / Rim Dent 97 Environmental Damage 98 Damage

Well, if PCGS gave them Genuine, what would make one think that NGC wouldn't do the same? If you know it's going to come back in a Details slab, might as well give it to PCGS for the better resale value.

No reason to pay extra for slabbing if it's not going to get a grade regardless... I can't really speak about attribution, but I'd guess that the collectors who would be willing to pay extra for a VAM could also confirm for themselves if it is that VAM

I think the question is, is it better to have a NGC details with a grade than just a genuine from PCGS not that they think it would grade problem free at NGC, just that NGC also puts a grade on the label which PCGS doesn't do

As a collector, if I saw either label, I would now what it means, and to me, it means the same thing. I try to avoid problem coins and personally, I would stay away from any auction with a problem coin whether it be "Genuine" or details graded. The only benefit I see is that NGC will put the attribution on the label even if details graded, but you need to request it and pay an extra $10. That may help to raise the price a bit as collectors w/o the knowledge to identify the variety or too unsure of their skills will feel reassured it is the proper variety. But you have to balance that with the cost of getting it graded.

So if NGC came back details grade and cleaned it would be a wash. (sorry about the pun)
Thanks for the responses.
