I know this is HIGHLY subjective for individual users, and I'm not necessarily asking what to buy, as much as wanting to hear ideas. I have been pretty big into investing recently. And I am trying to put about 10% into precious metals. One, for the security, and two, because having a giant stack of silver or gold looks awesome, gives me a great feeling, and I think coins can be beautiful! But I have abou 300-400$ I want to spend, and I know you can get some great deals at these places. I just bought a stack of silver eagles off of ebay for a decent price. But wanted something different. Ive really been looking into gold and platinum. If I could get some 1 gram bars for something closer to spot that would be fantastic, but the premiums on these things are ridiculous. But I've been looking at maple leafs, the australian lunar coins are really cool looking, but really expensive (not in my budget for the coin show obviously), silver/gold/platinum bars and coins... But anyways, what do you guys think?

I think I would look at "Junk" silver. I have been nervous about silver prices since the $25 mark was breached. If the bottom falls out on PM you will still have the numismatic value. I do not think the metals market will crash anytime soon mind you, But unless you are a very rich person commodities are not all that safe. And metals are commodities.
Oh yeah! one more item to consider...........Bulk Wheat Cents. With an unlikely lifting of a copper melt ban these could see double digit gains and seem to always be in demand, and they are still relatively cheap.

I think junk silver is where it's at. no premiums really. You're paying for metal and nothing else.

meh, I personally like the way bullion looks, lol. But I was thinking about starting to collect coins with higher silver value in them, like nickles, and silvee half dollars and whatnot.
But I just went through some spare change I had, and found about 30 pre-1982 copper pennies. After finding a few it was easy to find the others because of the different tint they have.
I was curious. Why wheat pennies for their copper value, vs pre-182 pennies?

If I had $400 I'd buy the following below - all bullion. > 1 Gram Gold Bar - (Engelhard / Pamp / JM / Credit Suisse with a certificate - no exceptions). > 5 oz silver bar (Engelhard or JM again) - I have a hard time finding those but I like them a lot. > 1 oz silver in bullion bars (Engelhard / JM) or 1 oz Engelhard Prospector Rounds only. I say Engelhard or JM (Johnson Matthey)because you pay a premium for those names now. They are considered to be the best of the best in the Silver bullion market. I believe with Silver going up further, you will get it back rather quickly. I never really caught onto the ASE's. Right now I'm in bullion mode (and will be for awhile). I also like the way bullion looks. I have some that are shiny and I have some are dingy/tarnish etc (gives it character). All are my beautiful babies. Good Luck.

Australian Silver Kangaroos. If you can find a 2007 for $100-$150 or less, jump all over that. Barber dimes, quarters and halves in Good4 Full Rims. Cull Morgan dollars with no holes.

I would be hard felt at 400 (I always think 1/4 an oz gold for that total, and Eagle perhaps, something popular), or maybe half an half, via a 1/10 an oz gold coin and and the rest in a nice 5 oz silver bar, or five individual 1 oz silver pieces perhaps....

PANDAS! the premium hurts at first, but when you realize how much faster they appreciate, you'llbe glad to have them!

Junk Silver Rules ! Sometimes you can find a better coin in the Junk Piles, I found a nice VF Seated Liberty dime last month. It had uneven toning but still looks real cool.

I was at my local shop today and searched his junk dimes. Found an MS Mercury, 2 better date Barbers, and a 1946-S MS for $3 each!

I would have to agree with the consensus of 90% Silver with the added chance of finding something with numismatic value. or WELL KNOWN .999 bars or rounds Englehard/JM or American Silver Eagles at $1.00 over spot I have been real lucky one of my local shops sells all kinds of Bars/Rounds and Eagles at $1.00 over spot Unless they Eagles have some kind of numismatic value.

Skip the silver and gold, that's what everyone is going to be looking for. You're not likely to get any better deals there than anywhere else. Why not go for things that you are otherwise unable to get, or unable to get at a good price? As to what that is, it depends on the show. For that kind of money, you can get a good start on a set of Half Cents, or a Julius Caesar "elephant", a couple of nice bust halves.......

Just got back. To be honest I was a bit overwhelmed. And a lot of things seemed overpriced. But I really don't know a lot. Not to many bars.... several art bars though. I needed up get a 1/10 gold eagle for a decent price, about 15$ over spot. which was very decent. Another guy a few spots next to him was asking for 30$ over spot. But I have a pretty good idea on what a coins silver value is worth, but not when it comes to numismatics. I really like benjamin Franklin half dollars, that are worth about 14$ in silver (I think) but most the ones I saw where being sold for 30-50$ that where in good condition. One guy had a big stack of some very VERY worn Ben Franklin half dollars that he said he would sell for 15$ a piece. And that just wasnt what I was looking for. With all the coins there, and not wanting or need anything specific, it was very hard to weed out through all the stuff that was definitely not what I was looking for. But I love the American eagle coins, I think they look great... Almost bought a 1/10 kruggerand instead though, but I went with the eagle.
