Have a question in regards to this half dollar. Just trying to get some opinions as to whether or not this coin has been cleaned. I know its hard to tell from a scan. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd say cleaned. The skirt lines suggest XF to AU details. Usually a coin that has seen that much circulation wear won't be a blazer like this one.

I was told that if it shine like a belt buckle it has been cleaned. He was referring to a cowboy belt buckle. The big shinny ones.

Tough for this guy to say. The lighting may be too bright. I detect what appears to be less uniformity of luster in the central areas which, given more natural lighting, might lead me to believe it's original. Many coins have been dipped, and unless excessively so, it's difficult to spot that level of cleaning. Try putting your coin next to others at a local coin shop ... see how it matches up.

Might be original luster, it's hard to tell from the picture, if the coin exhibits 'cartwheel' luster when rotated or rocked from side to side, then it might be original or lightly dipped. Also I cannot tell how extensive the wear on Liberty's left breast shield is or the immediate area just below the eagle's neck feathers to see the telltale evidence of grayness indicating light rub or just a weak strike. I find the blemished area on the left breast to resemble light wear especially troublesome, so just going by the pictures alone it looks like an AU-58, although the coin probably does and should look much better in person!

Thanks for the info. Was just curious, the coin shows little if any wear except for a slight scuff mark on the front of the coin towards the bottom, other then that it shows good detail. It does show the cart wheel effect. Want to put a set together as I like the design of this coin and wasn't sure if I should include this coin.

Your half dollar does not have that "cleaned" look at all. I believe it to be a high AU retaining most of its original luster.

In addition, the coin appears to have original frost on the fields and devices. If your coin had been cleaned there would be no frost, luster or pinwheel effect.
