How do you spreads your interest in collecting? I mean how do you chose what to collect? Is it a country, or an image on coins, or anything else? It's obvious that it's impossible to get all coins of the world. Before I was collecting one and all, but now I am thinking about to choose some definite direction/s. Personally I like very much exotic (for me) countries of Africa and Asia with their beautiful coins with animals and mysterious images.

Personally, I have a very strict criteria that a coin must meet before I will collect it. It must meet one of the following:

1) Is it shiny?
2) Is it dull?
3) Is it round?
4) Is it pretty?
5) Is it made of metal?
6) Is it common?
7) Is it rare?
8) Is it available?
9) Is it square?
10) Can I get my hands on it?
11) Do I like it?
12) Is it ugly?
13) Is it a coin?

If I can answer "yes" to any one of those questions, then I will collect it!

all the criteria above are valid... in the end, we all should collect what we like and what interests us as individuals. The choice of where to go with our collecting is one of the most appealing aspects of our hobby

But anyway somehow we should narrow the subject. If we collect everything there will be no system. If a coin is a present it's nice but on the othe hand we can\t buy and trade everything we see. Could then then just share what specificly you prefer? I saw at the forum there are collectors who collect only US coins and don't care about other countries. Or collect only silver, or only old...

For a lot of us, there is just no system or method to our madness. I used to "collect" anything that caught my fancy. I have finally narrowed it down to a handful of collecting interests, but that's because, after some time, I finally figured out what really interested me.

My advice to you, or indeed to anyone, is to collect what you like, and in the way you enjoy it whether it be from one country, one continent, or the whole world. You are the collector so you should enjoy what you collect, and who cares what anyone else thinks.

Just my opinion

Thank you for your opinion. And sure I will collect what I like. I just want to hear what other people collect. It's very interesting. May be it will give me a hint

Primary focus is Mexico and Spanish Colonials minted in Mexico, but I have a tendency of buying anything that attracts my attention. Mostly that applies to silver toners, like this one:

Like everyone else I collect anything that catches my eye. Here are a few things that I consistently buy:
1) Coins with fish on them.
2) 19th century Mexican coins, particularly 50 centavo pieces.
3) Any colonial coinage.
4) I'm also a few key dates away from a complete US Washington silver quarter set in mint state condition.

I tried the "shot-gun" effect of collecting everything from everywhere, for a while. Enjoyed every minute of it, but it just got too overwhelming for me. Between the discouragement of having so many mediocre coins, coupled with a life-altering sickness, I decided to re-approach collecting with some specific goals and structure. I sold off a large portion of my collection (including to several board members here), and now have a defined collection that is much more enjoyable. My primary collection is the coinage (and currency) of Yugoslavia and the former republics that were part of YU (Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro). I also have an idle secondary collection of the modern coinage of the post-USSR states of the CIS. I still have parts of my older collection that I am reluctant to get rid of, but eventually they will be pared away, including my Canada, UK, Philippines, Indonesia, and a few eastern European countries that I am still holding on to.
The last month or so has been a hectic stage for me, with work taking over my life, but it looks like things are slowing down and I will be able to commit more time to collecting and enjoying coins again.

I collect only U.S. coins. Mainly 3CN and Barber dimes. I don't know much about foreign coins, but if one really caught my eye and the price was good I would pick it up! I will occasionally get something other than the two mentioned types, but right now I am working hard to get them complete. However, I am to the point where the only ones I need are not cheap and the occasional commem or Mercury dime gets bought just to add to my collection!

vbekarevich, if you are willing to wait, I think I will be travelling around Asia next year January. If that's the case, I will keep a set of coins for you. I will post a note when that happens for that the rest of the forum members here can get Asian coins for face value

My numismatics articles and collection: http://www.gxseries.com/numis/numis_index.htm
Regularly updated at least once a month.

I collect anything that crosses my path. I have been thinking about starting a theme though. I like the idea of collecting as many coins as I can with Deers, antelopes, Mooose etc on them.
