Hey all. New to the forum and coin collecting in general. Been looking through a lot of cents lately and have seen many common things on all of them but this is the first time I've come across this. Like I said, I haven't been doing it long so bare with me but it looks like there is extra metal or copper on the top right hand side of the Lincoln Memorial? Let me know what you guys think! Thanks ahead of time!

to CCF.Looks like a die chip, part of the die broke away and that area gets filled in with "extra" metal. No added value unless it's real big and yours isn't.Keep looking there is a lot of cool stuff to find searching cents. John1

Thanks for the feedback John! I'll keep searching and hopefully I can post a picture of something a little better soon. Thanks again!

I don't see this very often and would still put it in a 2 x 2 even with little to no premium value. Still a nice find IMO!

I like that one too. I would also hang on to it.

i usually keep things like this also. I don't put them into 2x2's. I have a dedicated coffee (plastic container) labeled misc. breaks, chips, cracks, md, struck thru, clashes, laminations. I have saved probably 125 cents so far I'm my "misc" container. fun to review them from time to time.

They are very common , particularly on cents of 1983. The 2X2 would be worth more than the coin. I am not trying to be funny, but if you've seen as many 1983 cents as I have, you would realize how easy they are to find.
Another very common thing to find on 1983 cents are minor die cracks from the upper left and right portions of the Memorial building leading out toward the rim.

Could it be a copper penny. Just recently read an article over on the PCGS Library dated August 2, 2011 about the "1983 Copper Cent."

Die cracks on the 83's upper left cornice and the lower right retained wall to the rim are aplenty.

The copper 1983's are very rare and the chances are slim that it's copper, but you never know, until you weigh it that is John1

I can tell it's not copper by looking at the corrosion on the coin in the image.
If you want to find more die chips like that one to add to your collection, buy some rolls of 1960 cents. They are very common on 1960 cents.
