Hi everyone!
I recently received a coin from an older Japanese guy as a gift.
My concern is that it might not be authentic. On one side it says 420 grains Trade dollar 900 fine 1877 (I think its 1877), and on the reverse ide it says 1 yen. I have never heard of a 1 yen Trade dollar that is 420 grains.

Does anyone know anything about Japanese coins?

They are real,

Your pics are too blurry to tell authenticity, and looks as if you took them through a mirror.

to the community,

You would need to take clearer pictures before we would be able to say if it's real or not. This coin type is widely copied by Chinese counterfeiter's.

The picture is just clear enough to make out the highly irregular rim denticles, which means it's one of the modern reproductions that are all over the place now-a-days. It also has the wrong color and luster for a coin made of high purity silver, though that may be due to the camera or background lighting.

I don't even need to look at better photos - it's muled with the wrong die. No way is that genuine.

The reverse should look something like this:

Japanese-Trade-Dollar

It should weight around 27.2g - don't have my book handy so it can be a bit off.

OJsimpson, It is difficult to say your coin is fake or real from your blunt pictures.

The year of this piece is very rare so can you tell the price of it.

The weight of this kind of coin is very accurate and consistent so you had better to weigh this coin in order to take the preliminary proof to say it is real.
