I have to confess, I have always had the impression that bullion products aren't "coins" and therefore not worth collecting. They look like coins, sure, but are never meant to be circulated or spent. So I've never paid them any attention.

And then the other day, for the first time, I actually got to look at a high MS ASE in person. Wow. It might not be a coin per se, but it sure is a beautiful design. and beautiful on both sides.

Why can't we ditch the presidents, and have circulating coins even half as good looking as the ASE?

ASE are coins in every sense of the word it's just that these coins are NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation). Nearly every commemorative coin ever produced is also in this category with bullion coins.

I agree that modern U.S. coinage that is intended for circulation could use a little mojo as well!

They sure are beautiful! Just finished my complete set of bullion and proofs, all except the 95W.

I agree that I love the look! Of course we did have that design on the obverse of the Walking Liberty half dollar, but it's certainly gone downhill from there. Bills also used to look far more attractive. Check out the 'educational' notes of the late 1800s for example, compared to what we have today.

I've been getting a proof one every year and I agree they are beautiful coins. I wish they could get some designs on all the coins that would look this nice. Maybe with a new Mint Director there's hope.

I bet there are a dozen young Saint-Gaudens out there that could come up with some inspiring designs; history says the entrenched folks at the Mint don't like newcomers - job security. Daniel Carr, maybe?

IMO one of the most attractive designs ever, and even better in the ASE, with its larger size than the walkers originally were.

I wouldn't mind ditching the presidents. I have a 2006 ASE, and it's gorgeous. I also like the new reverses of union shield, and the ATB (a couple that I have found in circulation.)

I've been collecting ASE's for a little over a year. So far I have 2001, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011. They're beautiful and I'll continue to get them but as a slower pace than I hoped for due to the high price of silver.

I agree, ditch the dead Presidents and return to Miss Liberty and wildlife.

I stopped by my local coin shop just to see what they had in ASE's. The ASE sales are cash only, so I will be dropping by my bank Monday to get a little cash (we have almost become a plastic society).

Been thinking of buying birth-year coins for my niece and nephews. The older kids would be easy, just 5-6 coins per year, but the latest would be 10 coins. Think I will get them ASE's instead.

Was at a coin show today; common date ASEs were going for $44-48, a few had the mintmarked burnished uncirculated, so picked up a 07W & 08W pair for $100. Love the design, going to start collecting the proofs next. I only have the 3-coin 20th Anniversary set, and the reverse proof is one of the most stunning US designs, IMHO... Hope there is a similar type offering for this 25th Anniversary year!

NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation)

Nice term!
I also learned "NCLT" for non-circulating legal tender from the Canadians. They have a ton of these coins, way more than the US Mint makes. While I agree that our designs could be jazzed up, would you rather have the confusing mess from our neighbors up north?
