Today while searching a coin store in a different town, I was blown away with the idea that this store didn't have any cents in it! They had State Quarters, Dollars, proof sets, painted quarters stuff in window frames, but not one loose cent. That is what I chack for first. So on the top of the counter their was a box of foreign coins. So thumbing through them I found a coin that I didn't know existed. (Not that I've seen that many foreign coins) But this coin was a work of art. I thought you might enjoy it? So let's start a thread of off the beaten path coins?

That's a beautiful design, coop! I have a soft spot for a lot of the Central and South American coin designs. But, this is the one that blew me away when I first came across it. A "wildman" from 1737. Something about using a primative giant as a motif on a coin seemed so bizarre to me. I originally intended to collect them but out of about 300 auctions over the past year, this was the only one I got.

This one jumped out and grabbed me. Isle of Man, 1733. The triskellion and motto QUOCUNQUE JECERIS STABIT on the front means "wherever you throw me, I will land".

Nice coin indeed :) Even with the original mexico (Mo) mint mark as on old coins from Mexico :) I love south america's coin design, they have often great varieties and designs.

When I first started collecting as a kid, I would constantly find new countries in trays at local coin shops. Now, however, I rarely find anything like that because I've pretty much seen it all.
In terms of medieval coins, I constantly find new stuff online because there's such a plethora of coins from those centuries.
