Well, I swung by the ol local coin shop on way home from work today, and plans to drop 50 on a 1 oz round, and decided on the Englehard 1 oz silver prospector, as I have not added one yet. Reason being, it is from a sought after trusted name in silver, dated 1985, near perfect on front, and a couple tiny scratches on back side. It cost 51 bucks total, and it seems to be almost as popular as the ASE's, going on comments and pictures I have seen on this forum. And I am always thinking about future re-sale, after my first priority of liking it myself to begin with.... Call me crazy, but this calls for a banana dance celebration.... Maybe I'm ignorant, but what is a gold prospector? I just sold 2 plane jane silver prospectors still in the mint wrap, along with 4 other misc rounds for spot +2 a week or so ago. I know they were worth more than the other rounds, but I was glad to sell the whole set at once...

Yes, well the tax accounts for almost 4 dollars of that 51, so at 47 bucks, and silver real close to 44 bucks, still not the worst I guess. They are going on ebay with shipping for right at the same price.... Jimineez, no they are the silver prospectors, I need to re-word that. I said gold as that is what the man on front of the coin is panning for gold....

Taxes! You must've paid with a card or check, or you must not have a regular. Of course you are now on the way to break even soon, not counting the cost of fuel. This is an example of the Prospector:

At the very least a banana dance. Congratulations on acquiring something you really want. A couple of bucks, one way or the other, shouldn't sway you. Glad you are happy with it.

Silverhawk - great purchase and congrats! I like! I've read online that the 1983's Engelhard Silver Prospectors are the hardest to find, followed by the 1986, and then 1987. I have yet to find one of those years @ my shops. (without paying a huge premium).

With the price of silver going up almost a buck a day, I am happy to add it to collection, even paying a bit more for it....
Interesting note Fcrazo, the one I purchased has an eagle on the reverse side as opposed to that Engelhard logo on the back of the one in your pic. It does say Engelhard along the side however....
An tripncoins, mine had to fall right in the middle eh, lol. Via a common year in 1985. But then, if had been one of those tough to find years like you mentioned, it would have cost more....

swbrxxx, I hear you my man, Imagine paying HST or GST and PST on top of the already high silver prices and premiums!
I'm wondering if the govt will tax it in the future. I hope not!

Vinnycoin,
I would dread the day that would happen. Luckily enough a bill has not been passed to change that. Looking at the current situation I'm glad I can buy silver cheaper with CDN dollars and not pay tax.

Tax is the worst, but so is high shipping, and when the totals calculate to the same amount, the local coin shop makes sense to me over ebay. As it is silver in hand on the way out the door, where you have to wait a few days for it to arrive via mail.... Now then the cons to the local shops is limited selection, where online your selection is literally limitless. So when I am looking for a particular coin, I looked to buy online. I don't mind to wait a bit, as most coin dealers ship fast the next day as well seems like....

Good job, Silverhawk. That is a nice looking round for sure and it is from one of the top 2 round/bar producers at that. I agree with the comment about not denying yourself this nice addition over a few bucks. WA state also taxes the sale of gold and silver coins, so I do indeed feel your pain there. A bill has been proposed that will stop this but I don't think it has enough support, nor could it get past the veto pen of the state's Dem governor.
