Being a new to coins guy I went to my local shop and decided to pick up a GSA 1882CC today. I'm still not sure why I decided on that particular one but as I am new I don't really know what I'm gonna collect.

Long story short I was looking through a VAM website to see if it had anything particularly unusual and VOILA.... It almost has to be a VAM-2A1 die scratches in one of the "C"s the vee shaped clash between the wing and wreath and all the listed characteristics for this particular VAM. I also saw it was a top40 morgan and is a VAM that would be certifiable at PCGS.

My question is would the value be more slabbed and graded by PCGS or left in the GSA slab as a "Mixed Morgan". (beat up unc. as the cert explains).

I'll post pics tomorrow.

Oneeye, I would like to welcome you to this forum, I see you have very good taste, in the coins you have chosen to collect.
I too collect these 'GSA' Morgans, I have been collecting since 1963 and have fine tuned my collectibles.

I would, IMO, keep the coin in the GSA holder and send it off to NGC, I say that company because I have a few which I purchased this way, and come to think of it, I do not think I have ever seen one certified by any other company, thats not to say the other companies, PCGS, ICG,ANACS, etal do not provide this service, I would, what ever you do, make sure the coin is NOT removed from the original holder,If you have the original box and cards the coin came with also thats a plus and keep them as well as you would the coin, the value happens to hold up to being more than just the same coin graded by another 3rd party grader in their slab.

I also will tell you the Carson City Morgans command a larger premium for the coins compared to another mint, what ever you do, have fun, ask questions and enjoy the world of Numismatics and collecting, Mike....PS Excellent choice for a first coin!!!

Great.. now I don't feel the need to spend more. This is my 2nd coin though. I got an SLQ about a month ago and began my journey into coins, but I see how Morgans alone could fill a lifetime. I hope to stick around an amazing site like this for a long time.
