How many have a safe in your home, and if you do is it securely bolted to the floor and/or wall?

I bought a gun safe from local hardware store. Altered the inner shelves some, and that's what I use. I had it delivered, and its just sitting on the floor. Empty it weights over 250 lbs, and with all my coins it probably 400+ lbs. I worry more about fire than theft.

I don't have one yet but my sister got robbed last week and I'm going to buy a gun safe this weekend. They weigh over 500lbs and are fire-proof so that should do the trick. They can be bolted to the floor for added security. With the weight alone I don't think anyone would be able to get it out of the house very easy. The cost runs from $500 to upwards of $3500 all according to size and how long it will resist fire.

I have a smaller safe that probably weighs about a hundred pounds or so. It has holes in the floor and the back wall, so I have some 1/2" bolts both ways into the floor and backwall. If they get past my Doberman they will be scratching their heads wondering why the little safe won't budge. I live in a fairly rural area, and even around here burglaries are on the rise. Like they say, better safe than sorry.

My son bought a gun safe a couple of months ago. He got it from a discount sporting goods store on a special sale. They loaded it into his pickup at the store and we brought it home. We EASILY unloaded it, brought it into the house, and he installed it in an extra closet a week later. It was good sized and weighed about 520 lbs. empty. Using leverage and a hand truck, moving it was not difficult. Its weight would not provide any security against theft, IMHO, so I would caution all safe owners not to use weight as an excuse not to bolt it down securely. He bolted his through the floorboard supports using some grade five 8 x 1/2" lag bolts. It would take a fork lift to move it now. I don't have a safe yet but plan to get one. When I do, it will be bolted to some 2x8s that are Liquid Nailed to the concrete slab of our basement. I have secured wood to concrete before with this and it provides excellent strength and adhesion. Lag bolts through the 2x8s would be secured with nuts from the inside of the safe. All security measures can be defeated given enough time and effort. The trick to protecting your property from burglars is to make it more trouble to steal from you than it is probably worth. Most crooks are lazy and in a hurry. If they have to WORK at stealing something or getting it takes a lot of time, they are likely to give up and go elsewhere for easier pickings. One of THE best security measures anyone can use is anonymity. If no one knows you have something, it is unlikely that they will come looking for it. Bumper stickers can advertise what you have in your home, so avoid putting them on your car... except for something like Doberman or Rottweiler Owners Assoc.

Have been thinking of a fire-proof safe for years, use a safety deposit box at the moment. Long-term, would probably save money.

Imagine 2 burly criminals and what they can accomplish in 20 minutes. Or they can just tie a chain to it and literally drag it through any inside and outside walls with a truck. Best of luck

yea I probably should have it bolted to the floor, but I never did. but in my defense I was more worried about a fire, at least thats my excuse and I am sticking to it.

I just hide my silver under a massive pile of dirty laundry in the same room I keep my four dogs (three mean chihuahuas and one mean ankle biting Pomeranian), what better safe than that.... Like Ed said, time is a thief's worst enemy, and if it is not laying out in open site, or they know what they are looking for, their odds are not good of finding the stash.... I may add a c4 booby trap, like what Madmax had under his interceptor, but then blowing up the entire home is not gonna do me much good, rof ....

Is that where the phrase" Dirty Money" comes from? My Whole Family has small safes in our cupboards bolted in, Everybody stores there jewellery, passports etc in there, it is a central place where important docs etc is in. No issue where I live for being Burgled as Crime is almost non excisting in Abu Dhabi Middle East. And as for Fire, the place is made of concrete and marble so low risk, I guess we are lucky in that respect. But, where I hail from in South Africa, the crime is so high that you can bet your bottom dollar that you WILL be burgled, just a matter of time. So the question of Safe / Fireproof safe or not depends entirely on the risk profile of your area, and what the value of the stuff is that you want to keep safe.
