This puzzle always makes you think. But, it's just slight of digits.
They did only pay $27. $25 for the room and the $2 the bellboy kept.

I don't see where the dollar is missing either... $30-$5= $25, plus $2 for the bellboy is $27...

There is no missing dollar, the guys paid 30 for the room, they got a 5 dollar discount for no hot water (crappy discount btw) which they received 3 dollars of it and the bellhop stole 2 dollars. So 25 dollar room + 3 dollar refund + 2 dollar stolen tip = 30 bucks

There is no other dollar, the paid $30 for the room. The desk clerk told the bellboy to give them $5 in refund, so that leaves only $25 dollars. The bellboy pockets two dollars thinking that they wouldn't know that the refund was $5, so that leaves the count at $25 to the desk clerk for the room, $2 that the bellboy putz pocketed, and $3 to the original three men from the reduced refund.
$25+$2+$3=$30

Another correct way to look at it is the men paid 27, 2 to the bellboy and 25 to the owner.
Anyone else got good coin riddles?

haha I'm glad you guys explained it I was one page 1 for this hotel riddle and it made sense...until you tried to add it to $30 but with the explanation it makes me feel dumb haha that was a good one

Ten coins in a line, in two groups of five.
You count from the left:
" 10,9,8,7,6", and to speed to count, for the right group:
"And five makes eleven"
And there only 10 coins? How come?

I'm guessing you added 5 to 6 to get eleven... There are still only ten coins  |

You're adding quantity numbers and assigned numbers. If you put two in the first row, it would be 10, 9, and eight make 17.
I like using this trick on kids who are just old enough to add, to show them they have 11 fingers.

I've got one to keep the coin fun going while biggfredd conjures up another one of his much anticipated riddles. I hope that's okay with the OP, I just didn't want to create a new thread while this one is already around. So I was browsing ebay for deals on gold, and I came across a one of a kind Roman coin. The price was almost beyond my budget. It was an old old coin dated 44 B.C. There was some other stuff on it as well, which I couldn't interpret. And the gold looked like real gold, so how did I figure out it was a fake coin? And no, it wasn't being shipped from China, not that easy.  |
