You may want to see replies to this thread, I'm going to try coming up with new ones. I have two US coins in my hand. One is not a nickel. What are they?

Isn't this question from the short-lived series Firefly?
Think the line was "two coins equaling 30 cents, and one is not a nickel"

I thought it was....
I have in my hand only 2 U.S. coins which total 55 cents in value. One is not a nickel. What are the coins?

Quote: One is not a nickel. So....the other one is? Assuming 30 cents and not 55 cents, a quarter and a nickel?

Nah.... I assume sliver quarter and half-dime... No nickel there! Or a 20 cent piece with a dime... That would work, too...

See, I knew you clever folks could figure it out if I wrote it correctly, and wolf and penny man did.
OK, see the next post for a harder question.

You think you got a good deal on nine silver dollars at a yard sale. You took them to your coin dealer, who checked them in his electronic scale.
The good news is eight are good, and the fake is 10% light. The bad news is you got them mixed back together and forget which was fake.
At home, you only have a balance scale.
How can you find the fake in only two weighings?

balance 3 coins with 3 coins, with 3 coin sit on table. - If balance tips, pick the higher side. - If the balance is level, pick the ones on the table.
Of the 3 picked coins, put one on each side and one on the table. - If balance tips, high side is the fake. - If the balance is level, the fake is on the table.

It's an old puzzle. Here's another oldie but moldy (you can tell by the amounts): Three men pay the desk clerk $10 each for a $30 hotel room. When they get to the room, they discover there's no hot water and call the desk clerk, who says he'll look into it. He finds the hot water heater is broken, and since it's a holiday, he won't be able to get a plumber until the next day. He sends a bellhop to their room to explain, and gives him five ones to refund for the inconvenience. The bellboy figures they won't know about the refund, so he pockets $2 for himself And gives them the other three ones. So they paid $27 for the room, and the bellboy has $2. What happened to the other dollar? edited because I washed my hands and can't do a thing with them.

I am a bit confused here. If the bellboy gave them each a buck, that would be $28 and not $27. With $2 for the bellboy and $28 for the room there is no missing dollar.
