Found an odd '55 tonight while roll searching. First off, the date looks either doubled or there has been some Die Deterioration (primarily around the second 5 in the date)-I am pretty sure it is the latter. Secondly, on the reverse, I can see the entire outline of the Lincoln impression from the obverse. Both of these were pretty hard to photograph, but I got as good a pic as I could. Any idea about these issues? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Poor man's double die is what it is called.

The reverse is just a touch offcenter. :)

Maybe this coin was the one that started the 55 DD?

The off-center look is because of the angle that I shot the coin to show the impression of Lincoln. I could not capture the image with a straight up shot.

Uh no, completely unrelated. This coin suffers from severe Die Deterioration which is also responsible for Abe's ghost image(transfer die wear) and yours is quite a strong example. The 1955 doubled die was created when the die steel was impressed(hubbed) with the image twice but the second hubbing was not aligned with the first hubbing. That die struck 1955 DDOs from beginning to end while the die used to strike the posted coin started out striking coins with normal detail but was used long after it should have been retired which resulted in the mess you see.

biokemist6-I got the Die Deterioration on the date and the misalignment on the true double 55, but I may be having a senior moment, I still do not understand how Die Deterioration caused the "ghost" image.

Alan Herbert's The Official Price Guide to Mint Errors 7th Ed. has termed it Heavy Design Transfer.

Quote:
A die that was damaged due to repeated and lengthy use to strike coins which results in the vague outline of the central design element of the opposing die being transferred to the other die through the planchets as they are struck.

Stress on one die from repeated use with another die. Pretty simple, actually.
