I've come across this a couple of times before and I'm just as perplexed as then. The "B & E" in Liberty and the "8 & 2" in 1982 look split but where they are split, they also look like they've lost their coating. Has anyone ever run across this before and what is it?

Looks like plating removal. Seems a bit close to the center, but a wrapping machine damaging the coin might be the explanation?

The Y on Liberty looks like a Double Die but I could be wrong.

I've seen it hundreds of times, never bothered questioning what causes it. All I know is that the coin is lower grade, and it's not an error, so they go back to the bank.

This coin is not a doubled die.
