So the other day I was visiting my parents and being a collector I started looking through my dad's big jar of change looking for quarters to go into my Washington Dansco.

He brought down a baggie with some quarters, halves and dimes in it and told me could have them. It contained 4 1964 Kennedy halves in AU/BU range, a 1965, 66, and 67 Kennedy, 2 1917 mercs, 4 1932 Washington quarters in AU/BU range and 2 1934 BU Washington quarters. The biggy was an 1877 S Seated Liberty quarter in a strong XF.

So I was looking on ebay to see how much the SL quarter was selling for since my Type set has an AU 1877 S quarter in it already. I saw that there was a variety s/ hor. S. I thought I would check mine out and sure enough, the quarter my dad gave me appears to be the S/Hor. S.

But I can't find a pic of one to know for sure. My camera could never capture the up close detail of the mint mark, but the mint mark is strong and looks slightly raised. On the left is a lightly struck, bottom of the S with a strong serif. The middle of the vertical mint mark has an extra line of metal in the middle and the right side has a faint curved line that resembles the top of an S.

Does it sound like a winner?

Anyone got a close up pic?

Thanks

sounds like a great find, first make sure the 1877 is real.

PCGS coinfacts has one in VF30. The file is over 8MB which allows you to zoom in considerably. I looked at this and cannot identify the horizontal S, but I am not familiar with this variety.

It's pretty obvious - there's almost half of a nice clear "S" sticking out to the left of the mint mark.

Holy cow, PCGS - ever heard of "Reduced .jpg Quality?"

if you have a cherrypicker's guide vol 2 they might have a pic of it in there. and you should be able to tell with the naked eye....with a 10x loupe, even more so.

As soon as I read your posting I ran for a closer look at the 1877 - S Quarter I got just last week. Only one "S" , and vertical at that. Dang!
Congrats on your great find!
