Great find Ed_B! Not to break your thread, was just reading about that movie, coincidence...

Thanks, Jack. I picked through about 200 or so of the
Mercury dimes in a large canvas sack, so these were pretty much the best ones.

As to the movie... it may be the best movie I've ever seen. It reached a level of excellence so far above the usual Hollywood drek that I am not surprised that those who roll in it did not like this movie. Clearly, they are the ones who attempt to pull down the heroes in the movie. It would be a terrible shame if the other 2 parts do not get done. This movie will appeal to those who read and thrive on ideas and ideals. Those seeking cheap thrills that are very well presented will be turned off. I learned a long time ago that most movie critics suck big-time. I always most enjoy the movies they pan and refuse to watch the worthless cr@p that they idolize.

Franklin halves at spot ($17 each) a couple days ago. But paid 7.5% in New York State sales tax, so silver will need to go up 7.5% for me to really meet the spot price.. - Willy13
Excellent find, Willy. I was looking for some nice bullion halves today but my local shop did not have any that appealed to me. He had a lot of them for $60-100 or so but since I do not collect key dates and other rare coins, I would rather get a roll of BU or VF halves from
APMEX.

keep on stacking and those merc look to be in great condition - Mkman123
Stack, stack, stack!

Yes, these are in pretty decent shape. Picking through a whole pile of dimes to find these was most of the fun!

Yes I like the image on those Merc dimes, the messenger winged helmet, very nice addition... - Silverhawk
Thanks, Silverhawk. I've always liked the
Mercury dimes. Not sure why but the classic look they have appeals to me. You just don't see them all that often anymore.

I have never heard of using toothpaste or brush, that could possibly be abrassive. I clean with TarnX that I bought at home depot, and it has worked well for me, but who knows the toothpaste trick may even be better for the coin than the tarnX, just make sure that is an ultra soft brush.... - Silverhawk
This is a trick that I use for cleaning fine quality things that I want cleaned but not polished. It works well. I always use an old toothbrush that has seen a year or two of service, so is nicely soft yet still cleans well. I would not use a toothpaste like "Pearl Drops", which is quite abrasive, but have never had a problem with the major brands of toothpaste. The idea is to clean them very gently and not just scrub and grind on them.
Yes, Tarn-X is a dilute aqueous solution of sulfamic acid and sodium thiourea. It is excellent at removing oxygen from silver oxide, resulting in a very clean and bright look after use. Be sure to rinse really well after use, though. I need to get some of this and plan to use it as well for any tarnished coins I want to clean. Not sure how well it would remove skin oil and the dirt that can be combined with it, though. The TP works well on that but does not remove oxidation. Perhaps a combo for best results?
