Is anyone as grumpy as me that the numismatic world is going nuts over silver? 80% of the coin ads on my local used site are for silver at 40 or 50 times face. People on the street are constantly talking about PM investing (and the usual bomb shelter speech). Heck, I've seen as many as 5 out of the 10 most recent posts here on CCF about silver. It's getting so bad we now have a post about all the silver posts! (Is this the first?) So here's your chance to gripe about the silver mania. My 2 cents: I want my hobby to stay focused on some of the intricate and fascinating aspects of numismatics, instead of falling victim to the bling! PS: This is still the best site on earth for coin collectors! But it presently helps if you filter out "silver" (just kidding)

there is a chance I might get some of the silver that's talked about, maybe. A discussion about gold or platinum would be much less interesting.

Step over to the PM forum if you want to see crazy. Makes you wonder how CCF survived without a Precious Metals Forum for so many years! bibd is right, IMHO, that it does take something away from the numismatics when the focus is metal value. Don't get me wrong, numismatics has a metal component for sure, but it shouldn't be ALL about metal and somedays it seems that way lately. I'm as guilty as anyone so we won't be calling the kettle black. Your point is well taken.

What really gripes me is having to pay over $3 for a Merc.

Funny how everyone kept wishing for higher silver prices for over 20 years, and now that we have higher silver prices, everyone's out. We got our wish. Silver's high. No more $10 ASE's. High silver prices equal high silver coin prices. Deal with it.

Look at the two silver linings here,1) if you don't want to discuss PM prices, avoid the PM forum, most of the discussion is centered there thanks to the recent addition of that forum, many of us spend a lot of time there exchanging valuable information,2)those of you who have collected silver coin sets over the years are gaining in wealth without being taxed on it or having to work for it!smile,be happy! If we are all lucky, the group of thieves in Washington will get their act together and the problem will remedy itself. In the meantime, there are still a lot of great nickels and cents out there to collect. Have a great day everyone!

Well there's the thing. Once you have enough money to satisfy your needs the bling loses it's blong.
I've started (yet again) concentrating on small cents . I can't reasonably improve my own collection but I've started complete sets in MS for others, the youngsters in the family and so on. Affordable and distracting.
I'm enjoying the PM ups and downs though, it's just that I'm not glued to the spot prices. I'll check in every couple days to the PM forum or debate some point about investment but I haven't changed my own strategy of "buy every collection that comes to my door". The opportunity to sort coins and beauty from garbage is just too appealing to me regardless of metal values.

Absolutely. I don't remember the getting that high in the 80's.

Enjoy the silver bling. I am. Probably Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, I am going to sell almost all of my silver. Then, reinvest in Lincoln wheat cents. Will only be saving three ASE's that I bought the year each of our kids were born - 87, 89, & 91. Will save them for the kids. Other than that...all will be sold. High grade Morgan's, Peace, 90% silver common, and ASE's.

Quote: We got our wish. - DNA Indeed they did... so, be careful what you ask for because you just might get it! On the other hand, those of us who are into collecting silver for the long run are not paying a lot of attention to the price. We just buy when and what we can and add to the stash.
