How many people do you tell about your coin collecting hobby? Most of my family members know I collect, but I only have a few close friends who know I am a coin collector. I have always been discreet about my collecting because I didn't want the wrong type of person to find out about my collection. I am asking because one of the people I work with recently came across several hundred silver halves while rehabbing a home he bought. They were all Walkers and Barbers. He sold the silver to a local dealer for a little less than spot value. If he had known I was a collector at that time he said I could have had first shot at purchasing the coins. I would hate to miss out on another situation like this. Should I let a few more people know about my hobby?

Family and a few of my co-workers. Also a couple of my neighbors but they also collect coins. Fewer know I collect beer cans as well.

I tell my friends, family, postal worker, bank tellers, people at my fish & game club, co-workers...I know I'm taking a chance, but do have a good safe and concealed carry permit. So far, the benefits have outweighed any negative consequences.

I don't. Same with firearms. Most people don't know.
My reasoning, word gets around...one way or another. The low lifes will eventually think they will have a grand slam at my house.
I love my family, the 85 pound wonder dog, my 40, my 12 gauge, a couple of gunsafes, and NOT bad people determined to do bad things.

Family and a few of my co-workers know I collect. Except for an uncle that used to collect, I am the only one in my family that collects coins.

Family and close friends: I don't live in Shangri-La, and I've always been afraid of someone telling someone else, who then tells their brother-in-law, that so-and-so keeps $6K+ of coins and PM in his home. There are some around here that would disappear you for a lot less...

im with acloco.....family and girlfriends family are the only people that know.....id hate for someone to break in to steal my coins AND find my firearms that I store with the coins....no one relly needs to know and most of my friends and other relatives could care less about me collecting because they would have no clue what I was talking about....THUS the reason I joined this community....everyone talking about their personal collections and not having to worry about you guys coming after my stash haha.....

Family & a few friends. Most just know that I "have some coins," not necessarily that I'm really into coin collecting. I don't usually discuss it too much with anyone other than my wife and immediate family, but once in a while I'll show off a new acquisition. They especially seem interested in the Ancient Roman coins.

Just you guys (and gals) on the Internet. Co-workers, suppliers, and family members might know I have an interest, but I never discuss my interests or acquisitions with them. I have advised people how to dispose of collections that they have come into or received coins as gifts, but never with my own holdings. I don't want to be known as the guy in the neighborhood with a couple a dozen easily transportable coins worth more than $1K each, nor with a stockpile of easily accessible PMs. You never know which trusted friend, family member tells his or her brother-in-law who in turn tells a fishing buddy, who then decides to make an easy kill one night after a few too many beers... I might miss out on a few buying opportunities, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've seen friendships ended over these kind of 'friendly' sales, where someone feels taken advantage of later, once they realize the true value of what they sold. Not worth throwing friends over to save a few bucks. It helps coin collectors if they are on the anti-social side.

Family and a few friends. The girlfriend of course. All have been very supportive about it which was surprising at first.

Probably only my wife knows everything about the collection, in fact it's rather "our" than "my". As for family and friends a lot of them know we collect but they know only about a part of things we have.

A fair number of people, and all of them are told the coins are kept in the SDB, I don't keep anything at home. And or course I don't tell people where home is either. I don't get mail at home, I have mail drops for correspondence and for shipping. No utilities in my name, phone is unlisted and paid for online so no bills.
