Excellent find ... I say this is 1939-DDR-001.  Grade (IMHO) is F-12 ... a wonderful circulation find indeed. David

This is not an error - it's a die variety, and a very nice one! Consequently, coppercoins.com indirectly owes its beginnings to one of these 1939 DDR nickels. I had one in my Whitman folder, and upon learning there was a valuable 1939 nickel, I popped mine out, flipped it over, and there it was. That started my quest into die varieties. I had some cursory interest in errors, but lost that after figuring out there was no way to know what a set of errors is...so I stuck to die varieties.
