I went through one of my $ 200 bank bags today basically picking out pre 1960 nickels. I found about 5 silver ones and this:

Good catch! I wish I was turned on to this stuff before I started roll hunting for silver. To think what I may have missed.

Excellent find ... I say this is 1939-DDR-001.

Grade (IMHO) is F-12 ... a wonderful circulation find indeed.

Even as we're reaching for the loupe on these we're thinking the chances are so slim. This must have floored you when you saw it. What a rush!

This is not an error - it's a die variety, and a very nice one!

Consequently, coppercoins.com indirectly owes its beginnings to one of these 1939 DDR nickels. I had one in my Whitman folder, and upon learning there was a valuable 1939 nickel, I popped mine out, flipped it over, and there it was. That started my quest into die varieties. I had some cursory interest in errors, but lost that after figuring out there was no way to know what a set of errors is...so I stuck to die varieties.
