Its just my opinion, but I think what is happening at the mint is what I think of as the "Star Wars Collectable syndrome." When the first Star Wars movie came out - they made a specific number of the action figures. These became valuable even before the second round of Star Wars movies/action figures came out since there were more people wanting them than the manufactured number of pieces.
When the second group of Star Wars movies were made, the companies had learned that people would buy them like crazy - and they were right. In fact so many were made/sold, that even the ones that were advertised as being "only one per per box delivered to the store" still can only be sold for the original store retail price or thereabouts. The production numbers well exceeded the people wanting them.
What is being sold nowadays as collectable, overall, turns out to be so massed produced that the desire to have one - even in future years - will be a goal easily achieved. There are exceptions to the rule - but overall I think this is a trend I have seen.
When something truly original happens - like the funky little ladybug coins made at the Canada mint this year - the price is high when they are sold on
ebay. But I have a feeling that after a few years the price will drop. And if I am proved wrong - all the better for the people who bought them!
