I have been going through my deceased step fathers collection one coin at a time. Phew, anyway I had graded this coin etc. years ago and had written "Variety 5"/Rarest on the coin flip for some reason. Now I cannot find any info on it or even remember why I might have of thought this coin was a variety in the first place. Sorry, losing my mind :)
It has both Arrows and Motto. Grades a G-6
I had it at VG-8 originally but then I learned that at least
3 of the letters in Liberty had to be discernable. (L and Y
are) any help in solving my own dilema/forgetfullness would
be appreciated. Also, the values on this coin seem to be all over the place. I do not know the red, grey etc. so ?
I did a FMV and came up with an avg. of $1,065.00 @ G-6
I realize that this figure is not obtainable but wanted a ballpark. The coin will be sold raw. I had a dealer of mine
offer me $250.00 U'mmm, no thank you :)
Images are scans so not great at showing detail etc.
Had to crop the crap out of one just to get it under the 90
max. to post it here :) I should of just put it up at photo bucket. Once again anyway, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Oooo, that is a toughie I see no reason why it would not make VG-8, you have to take into account the entire coin and not just rely on LIBERTY which tends to be a bit softer on the SL halves and dollars. $250 is a serious lowball but you really should consider getting it slabbed, that is a $1500+ coin in the proper venue. The best comparables from Heritage are a VG10 that sold for $2000 in January and a G6 that sold for $1495 in January.

I cannot really comment on the "variety 5" listing, Wiley-Bugert only lists two varieties and only two obv and one rev die were used for the mintage.

Thanks much for your input. I am no expert on these type coins but will have to learn pretty fast :)
First time I saw any coin go for over FMV.
I also backed off of offers on an Unc. 1866 half and an 1847 anacs AU50 dollar. Hope I did not screw up too bad on a few that I did sell today ?
1859-O half F - $40.00
1855 half F - $35.00
1878-CC morgan VF - $80.00
1877-S Trade dollar EF40/45 - $200.00
1864 2 cent EF40 - $35.00
If so, I better cool my jets and learn more on here.
Many more coins to come in the near future also.
Thanks again. I would rather liquidate most of this collection on here as to give others the chance to get a coin that maybe they really wanted. But afraid of the higher end ones for the average joe. I guess a few auctions
would not hurt. A slab for the 74 CC like you stated might be the best idea. I've only used anacs in the past. Easier for me to do on my own. No way I do Epaybaypal any more. Not thrilled about any auction house either. You figure the costs involved etc. It would be worth it to sell a coin on here for a little less and then everyone is happy. Well, back to work. Gotta do an 1876 half and a 1872 dollar.
A little at a time :)

If the grades are accurate and the coins problem-free, here's typical wholesale for these pieces:

1859-O half F $40 at best (good price)
1855 half F - $35 was a good offer.
1878-CC morgan VF $80 was an excellent offer.
1877-S Trade dollar EF40/45 $200 is full retail.
1864 2 cent EF40 $35 was a great price for Lg. Motto.

Looks like you got excellent prices. The Sm. Motto 2 Cent piece would have been worth $500. Lg. Motto is common.

That link cleared it all up. Thanks.
Mine is the WB 101 (breen 4988)
Got the cowlick :) LDS
The 5 was the rarity factor not the variety. Duh Ron :)

You should post pics of the coins you are preparing to "liquidate" in the grading section. Then, base your decision on there.

My reasoning - why trust one person when there are several hundred on here that have do not have a monetary interest in the sale. Unbiased opinion that is backed by a couple thousand years of combined numismatic experience.

Yeah, VG8 in my book. PCGS may go with G6 on the conservative end.

Yes, I will be doing so as far as posting for fairly accurate grades.
Only downside is they will be scans. I do pretty good scans but need
work on my dig. pic skills. I come to the conclusion this coin would go VG8. 10 seems a little high and in hand the motto is somewhat readable. Prices are all over on it though at that VG8 grade. Ranging from 1300 + to 1700 + (auction houses, ebay, shows etc.)
Thanks again all. Will be posting a few lower value type halfs/dollars soon. The morgans I am pretty adept at grading myself. No monsters there anyway. Some Comm's and a 5 cent and maybe a few Peace dollars. Then when I have the rest of the collection in hand I can start again. Flying eagles, indians, dimes, nickels, etc. some mint and proof sets. Some others I forgot what ?

Still deciding what to do with this coin. If the article
below is accurate and up to date I might just send it in
for # 75 :) I noticed none have been graded by Anacs.
Maybe they will do a freebie for me. Ha, Ha
Still interesting reading. Had no clue before on the mintage etc. until now.

Oh well, just got off the phone with anacs. They did do a single coin already but it was not the WB101 variety. No freebie. I just noticed the date on the article. It was from last fall. Guess if I choose them i'll just have to add $5.00 for the variety labeling. I already told the lady on the phone the grade of the coin so no need for them to bother with that aspect of the procedure.
