Here is a pic of the date on an 1887 Morgan dollar. The leftmost 8 has its middle "clogged" with a chunk of metal. However, the metal also exhibits lines conforming to the curvature of the 8's upper circle.

Is this maybe where a chunk broke out of the die, thereby causing excess metal inside the 8's groove? Is this type of occurence something that would be considered a variety in CherryPickers' Guide? It is not in the book.
Thanks for any help.

You have it diagnosed exactly right. This isn't an uncommon feature on Morgan dollars; it's normally an indicator of the variety, rather than being the sole feature of one specific VAM.

It's a die chip peculiar to some VAMs and a couple of normal strikes. Check out the VAM guide.

Thanks for the help. How do I go about finding a person who would appreciate this more than I? I hate to think it would just go back in the collection when someone else might think its something great to have?

As noted this is a die chip, common to many years, and by it self its is a reference, a secondary pick up point, meaning, the chip it self does not diagnose a specific VAM designation, one must look at the whole coin, usually date position and mint mark position/ clashing marks and die chips and gouges to narrow the diagnosis down..
your coin with only a die chip..is but a small point in determining what VAM it could be

As already noted if that one attribute matches up with others
to make it a VAM that is listed in the Top 100, hot 50 or hit list 40 then it would command a premium more so than just the other regular VAM listings. Grade and previous value reports
will show that.
