When sealing 2x2's with tape, can store-bought tape be used in sealing them without any harmful effects? Or is there a certain type of coin-safe tape that's available? I have some generic clear plastic tape and I'm not sure whether to use it.

Personally I think taping them is pointless. They will not be airtight... If you want "sealed 2x2s" I would buy the ones that self seal.

I know the clear plastic will yellow and fall off with age. Magic tape will not. But I have no idea of how safe either are.

I agree with Americanmafia, use the self seal ones.

I use 3M Clear tape. Per the manufacturer there is no harmful gasses emitted during the drying process and so far over many years of use does not yellow or turn dark. Also, does not become brittle. Also, very little air can get to your coins. I've been doing this for many, many years now and no problems. Cheaper than buying special flips already glued, staples, staplers and staple pullers.
Also, really easy to open with a knife and then can easily be reused. Unfortunately the clear can not be written on easily but the so called Magic Mending tape can but not sure of any long term effects with that product.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. And just carl, with the clear tape that I have I should tape over the corners also right?

Also, with plastic flips would it be all right to tape the opening?

That over the corners is something I missed doing myself. For some reason never even occured to me to do that. Naturally if there is a way of air, moisture, gasses to get to a coin no one wants it to get to, it finds a way.
Now with virtually thousands of 2x2's done without the edges taped, it would be a monumental task to redo them all.
Also, with plastic flips I never did tape them and always assumed they are safer in those for some reason.
I wonder to be really safe on valuable coins if a 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 flip would fit into one of the 2x2 plastic flips and then into a 20 page plastic sheet? Or is this getting excessive?
Oddly enough all my really expensive or so called valuable coins are in Albums.

3m clear tape? Because I have the Scotch crystal clear tape in a dispenser (the one with pointy tips to cut the tape off) thats basically store-bought. Would that be safe for the task?
