Please, only non-British Commonwealth members should answer. I figure collectors from countries with more recent Brit Roots will get the answer as soon as you see the pics.

The 1948 dollar in Canada is sometimes called the "King" of their coins. It is rare and expensive. So here is a test to see how well we can detect a counterfeit...

Here is my copy 1948 Canadian Dollar. Yes, it is non-magnetic. And yes, it really is silver. Its weight is correct. Under a magnifying glass its porosity, prevalent on the fake Chinese coins, is not as prominent as fakes made in a harder metal.

So what is the most obvious reason this one is a fake?
(Hint: more obvious than the shape of the number 8 in the date!)

Note the toning is not there in real life - just the way the sun hit it. The fingerprints normally do not show either!

BTW - the very reason I bought this coin was b/c (being I have a teacher/research gene ) I want to become educated and share what I can about the replicas so we can all be better prepared for what we encounter.

Oh, I see now. "ET IND:IMP:" should not be on any 1948 British or British Commonwealth issue.

The new dies required by the change (removal of the Emperor of India reference) were not ready until later in the year.
