For everybody's info - here is a list of the replica Canadian coins being made in China. There may or may not be more: 1858 penny 1859 penny - Brass 1925 penny 1923 penny 1936 Dot penny 1884 nickel 1880-H nickel 1875-H nickel 1925 nickel 1926 far 6 nickel 1944 nickel - Tombac 1875-H dime 1884 dime 1889 dime 1893 dime -- large 9 (R3) 1936 dot dime 1875-H quarter 1880-H quarter 1889 quarter 1893 quarter 1872-H half 1870 w/o "LCW" half 1888 half 1890-H half 1894 half 1921 half 1932 half 1945 $1 -- circulated and/or Unc 1947 $1 -- circulated and/or Unc 1948 $1-- circulated and/or Unc Note the replicas representing real silver coins can also be made of silver. In fact as long as you paid them, the Chinese would make any of these coins in silver. This might explain the silver "type coin" Flying Eagle cent I once saw on ebay. I am assuming ebay kicked the main Chinese sellers off b/c the Chinese would sell the copies without the word replica on them.

I assume it was made in China but do not know for certain but bought an 1870 FB 5 Cent that was an obvious cast but somehow got past the dealer that sold it to me. He is a reputable dealer and took it back no questions asked and paid the extra shipping charges... so maybe add that one to the list. It was a dull grey, cast marks on the rim, normal granular look you get from some castings.

Thanks. I wonder who made that one? This list is the ebay seller who used to have pages and pages of replica world coins.

I've pulled dozens of fakes out of the auction before they hit the floor, if they're silver I put them in the assay required melt bin, otherwise I destroy them and dump the pieces in the scrap pile. Mostly US stuff though and we don't always sell coins it's just that 20+ years is a long time, bound to see things come up.

I noticed in the january Coin News that the chinese had made what appeared to be a VF grade NFLD 1940 10 cent piece copy, and couldn't understand why they would bother to copy a $10 coin when they could copy a more expensive coin. Anybody know why ?

Making a 10 cent copy of a coin you will sell for 50 cents (nice margin) to someone that will sell it on ebay or elsewhere for $3-$5 (nice margin) is not so far fetched. Less people would suspect a cheap coin and there are a lot more to buy cheap coins then the expensive ones. Someone buying a pricey coin may be (and I say that carefully) better able to identify a copy from the real thing as well. Higher success rate with cheap coins... hey if someone could make quarters for 10 cents and pass them off as real its a big margin... you just need volume to make it work.

photos of many of the counterfeit coins are on the RCMP web site and the CCRS web site. Also a discussion of the 1858 and 1859 large cent counterfeits are on the Victoria Large Cent blog

There's a similar list for US coins, available at any bookstore. Just ask for the RedBook.

One other thing to remember is that this guy who was the largest on ebay (and I am only talking about the one source, remember - there are others) was making such a huge variety that I believe he could afford to make copies of coins that were not such high end pieces compared to others. His list price on ebay was only 2.00 each. I am sure there are others who make copies. And I know there are counterfeits made that have nothing to do with this influx of Chinese coins. I guess I should have titled this post as being from this specific Chinese person. BTW, I was at my local coin shop not too long ago and the owner and I were discussing this exact coin maker. The dealer then went on to show me a fake 1916d dime that was altered - not made of cast dies like these Chinese fakes. I had heard of people using glue to place a mint mark on a coin, but this was the first I had personally seen one. in fact until these Chinese started marketing these, the only counterfeit coin I remember seeing was a 1936 WLH cast out of lead that was retrieved from a change machine years ago. A lot changes when you stay away form a hobby for around 10 years or so!
