Just curious what is a fair premium to pay for silver eagles over spot?

fair would depend on who you are talking to....at one point premuims were $10+ over spot per eagle and most here thought it was crazy, however others were still buying......me personally would pay $5-$7 over spot per eagle.....to me that is what I feel is "fair"

Flook...yeah I was thinking around the $5 range. I know it's subjective to each seller. Would love to hear what other CCF members have to say!

that is very true....anytime I find a seller doing just over spot I try and buy up as much as I can......craigslist has some very shady people, but its hard to go wrong with the eagles...

If I could find them for 3 over spot, I'd empty my bank account. 5 - 7 is what I'd expect.

Until April, the max fee on an ebay auction was $50, now $100. This has had some effect on rolls of Silver American Eagles. If silver is $35 and a roll sells for $860, the seller is going to pay ebay 9% of the sale price or $77. The PayPal fee is around another $21. Figure postage of $10. Seller's net is $752, $2.60 over melt. That is for a roll of 20 new 2011 coins. Sometimes older rolls or mixed date rolls go for less.

Oh I miss the days when silver was $17 an ounce and an Eagle was $19.50... I'm a tightwad, so anything over $2 is not acceptable to me for an ASE. Needless to say, the $6-$7 premium my local dealers are charging ain't workin' for me.

I'm with you about the high premiums. I turned down the chance to get 2011 Eagles in late January at $4 over spot and now I wish I had bought them. But I still think the higher premiums for current year Eagles is not worth it. Older years have the same amount of silver and they are cheaper. Besides, next year the 2011's won't be new any more and they will be a lower premium also.

Am I crazy but I could have sworn on craigslist not that long ago that people were selling ASEs for like $1 or $2 over spot. Now, the premium has soared to $5+? I don't mind paying a $5 premium if the coin will hold that kind of premium.

This might sound a little harass but if you buying eagles for 5 dollars and over spot, your just wasting your money and IMO thats stupid. I didnt mind buying eagles and other mint bullion for 1.5-3 dollars as I would trust it more then non mint products but when your spending 5-8 dollars over spot it is not reasonable and in such a volatile market. Silver just fell to around 34.60 from almost 50 in less then a week and that has me a little nervous for the most part. You can loose alot of money is silver say dropped big time back to where it was in aug. 16-18 and if I'm going to buy anything right now it would be 90% US coins. Since the drop I been buying about 100 dollars in 90% each week, better to get something near or below spot in case of a crash and at the same time if it goes back up to the 40-50 rang again your good still. Also I dont see much point in paying 5+ over spot on a coin that has 20+ million mintage each year, not rare at all.

I was just looking through E-BAY for Silver Eagles. It seemed to me the premiums were around $7-$10 and of course you have ones selling you shipping instead. So if I did see something reasonable it had an $10 shipping fee. That always drives me crazy. Have to get as many as I can before Silver climbs back up.

ebay has tried to stop the sellers with $700-900 shipping. If you buy a roll of Eagles for $850 with free shipping you get $17 in ebay Bucks to use for a future purchase. If you buy the same coins for $50 with $800 shipping, you only get $1 ebay Buck. The ebay Bucks is a great program and cuts your cost.

The comments about 90% silver being under spot was true up until March of this year or so, when that too, began to dry up and sell for a couple of bucks over spot. Junk silver IMO, includes modern proof silver singles, which a lot of people used to ignore if it were out of the OGP in preference to the complete silver proof sets. Which meant silver could be had for way under spot sometimes. Those were the days!

I just bought a silver eagle (1986) and paid $5.50 over spot, which I thought was fair enough. I don't collect them, I just wanted one for my type set so I wasn't too worried about it.

I think I am right there with Bryan1234...$1-$3 over spot...ok. But I don't want to spend money I can't get back.
So here is my situation. I have 23 rolls of 40% halves that I have found roll hunting. I know an individual who sells silver eagles and willing to do a trade. Basically it would be ounce for ounce on the silver plus $5/ASE premium. The guy really like 40% silver due to the fact you can legitimately sell it tax free. So, maybe I will trade it for 90%. I really don't care...I just want to consolidate down but not really take a hit!
Thoughts?
