Ed_B, that integrity will pay off when she pulls out more coins or tells others about your honesty and you get more coins offered. :)

Good job on the honesty part...I like that.

But I'm with those guys. I wouldn't do the Tarn-X. - Mitch

Thanks, Mitch. It's the way that I am wired. We all have to live with ourselves and that gets a lot easier when we can stomach the guy looking out of the mirror at us each morning.

As to the Tarn-X... gotta do it. I love SHINY coins. Ones burnt by O2? Not so much. Besides... Tarn-x removes no metal and leaves no residue. After rinsing and drying, it will be like it was never there... except for the shine, of course.

Way to have class and be honest. Good to go and darn nice purchase.
Thanks, Trip. It seemed the best way to create a win-win situation.

Good deal all around, that's how it should be done. Kudos...

Thanks, Jack. I always like to treat people the way that I would want to be treated. There are a lot of things in this world about which I know little to nothing. Would not want to have a bunch of BAD Karma hanging over me at the wrong time.

Thank you, Ed_B, for giving her a good price for the coins.

Not a problem, DNA. I see from your post that we think alike in such matters.

God please don't put Tarnex on those beauties!

Got to do it, Tim. I understand the purists position and all but...

I have my trusty bottle of tarnX right here, so you know my thoughts on that, Polish away, as sometimes you just gotta think outside the box, lol....

Will do, 'Hawk... yeah, I do know your position. It's the same as mine and probably for the same reasons. I understand the au naturel crowd and they can do whatever they want with their coins, 'long as we get to do the same with ours.

Quote:
Well done and kudos for giving an honest price!

Thanks, CoinHunter. This turned out real well for both of us. We both came away from the deal happy.

Quote:
That was a very classy thing to do on your part - good job. Plus, you still got the Morgan's at a good price.

Thanks, Okiepb. I wanted to be fair with her and not have to worry about her finding out from someone else that her coins were worth a lot more than $10. That would probably have been unforgivable. Don't want such things on my conscience... and there's no need to put them there.

Great find, great deal, and a show of great character .

Things do not get better than this. And thanks also b/c, IMHO, your handling of this situation is a feather not only in your cap, but in the CCF forum cap also!

Thanks, Earle. I just couldn't see myself slinking in here and reporting... "Hey, guys... I just ripped off an old unsuspecting lady!". Not my thing and with one exception that I can think of, not the thing of CCF forum members either. Far better to do the right thing and feel good about it for a day than to do the wrong thing and regret it forever. Life it too short and too sweet to mess it up like that.

I need to meet more old people

Indeed, ICanSeeYou. There are a lot of them out there and many of them are very lonely people. Visit them, talk to them, and make some friends. Maybe they have or know of a good deal like this. Then again, maybe not. Either way, more friends never hurt anyone.

I would actually leave them as is and not clean them. That's just me.

I understand, Trip. On the other hand, a little bling is a good thing!

Great integrity Ed. Nicely done.

Oh, and great score as well!

You get three happy peppers!

Thanks, GearDaddy. It's pretty cool when a deal works so well for both parties.

Great! I love peppers. I even have a Jalapeno pepper plant as a house plant. It's about 3 years old now and loaded with peppers. Tasty little guys, too.

That could well happen, MkMan. One never knows where a good deed will lead.

My grandmother was a wonderful and wise lady. She used to tell me things like, "We buy our ticket to heaven with the pennies we earn each day for our good works". Knowing her, she also thought that the bad things we do get us a ride on the not-so-good train.

congrats man! It's actions like that that make me think, when the chips are down, there's still plenty of good folks that'll saddle up for you.

I'd insert wacky emoticons but I'm new here and don't know how to with the quick reply. So just imagine all the wacky emoticons you want...they're yours!

About ten years ago my mother in a retirement village had some friends, an old married couple, who served as missionaries in Bolivia for over 30 years, and had now retired.

The couple said that they had some old 8 reale coins, which they wanted to sell and donate the proceeds to their missionary work back in Bolivia. As it turned out, they had about a dozen coins, ranging in condition fron Fine to good EF, dates from about 1780 to 1820, all of Potosi Mint. They said that they had been part of a cache of about 200 coins, and this small number of coins had been given to them.

They said that I could keep one, if I could get the best price for them. I said, that because of their generosity, I could not keep the best one, which was an 8 reale of Ferdinand V11, because that would bring the most money for them. The coin I kept is dated 1808, of Ferdinand V11, in nice VF condition. The reason I selected this coin is that I think Charles 1111, as depicted on his coins is SO ugly, and I told then so!

The coins were sold at time for about $500.

I still have the coin I kept. It is to me, quite a treasured possession.

I think you did the right thing because even though she named the price she was thinking they were worth she was also new you were a friend and instead of just saying I will take 10.00 for each of them she pretty much asked if 10.00 was to much, not gave you a firm price of 10.00. She trusted you would tell her the truth when she asked and she was right to do so it seems as you told her what you felt was fair for both of you. I know I say this all the time but I love seeing these types of stories from our members because it sets an example for the rest of the members to follow. I know I would have not been able to sleep good at night if I would have whipped out 10.00 a piece for the coins from an 80 year old lady and really glad you feel the same way

Jewelustre is bad enough when misused. Tarn-X isn't formulated for coins. And yes, it does both.

Ed, you are to be commended for your integrity and honesty. You hear so many stories about senior citizens getting ripped off and taken to the cleaners by scam artists, that a story like yours is refreshing. I believe what goes around, comes around, people earn what good/bad karma they pass out onto others, with the real undeniable truth that every single one of us will get to be an old person someday, if we are lucky. Good karma is essential.
Rest in Peace

There's a reason people say not to clean coins. Sure, they're yours to do as you please, but lots of us have seen coins ruined by cleaning.

If you've used tarnex on your coins any numismatic value they hold will be lost and if silver falls the value of the coins will fall significantly as well. I only will clean coins that are already ungradable, it just doesn't make sense to clean a problem free coin.

I don't see what the big deal is, it is like the guy on the pawn show who brought in an old 1880's colt pistol he had cleaned all the patina off of it with a wire brush, and the expert told him to go back an bury it in the yard for a couple more years, lol....

I have only cleaned some old twin towers coins from 2001 with brown toning spots which I thought looked bad, so I cleaned them up and now they looked great. What minor damage that acid did is not visible to my naked eye, and I fail to see how the value is effected. Sure, if I was planning to get them graded, perhaps this would have effected it, but the coins were no where near a 69 or 70 to begin with, so just happy for the silver content and the nice looking medallions in the end....

Go to APMEX & look at prices for the different grades of silver dollars. They sell everything from "less than culls" up to uncirculated pieces. The price for cleaned coins is less than the price for uncleaned coins in the same grade. It may only be a dollar per coin but at todays prices that's roughly a 3% difference. I'm not in the habit of giving up 3% of my investment.
