I am curious if others are seeing more rare coins coming into their local coin shops. I try to go to four different coin shops at least once a week. It seems recently I am seeing more harder to find coins being sold to thses shops. I think this has been brought up before, but for me it seems I have seen a big increase in just the past couple weeks. Are others seeing this in their areas? Some exmples of what I am seeing (This week) Key date Lincolns 1809 small o inside large 0 Half Centgroup of 6 different mid grade Two Cent coins 1972 DDO1909 S Indian Seated dollar Trade dollar Bust and Seated half dollarsI have been going to coin shops for many years, seems like most times I might see one or two good coins a week come in ... but it just seems different lately

Ive been seeing tons of good foreign stuff comming in to the local shops around me, since the dealers are selling the stuff for next to nothing I imagine they're paying peanuts for it. I have one dealer that I buy anything foreign non silver from for 10 cents, regardless of what the coin is! -XoG

XavierOfGreen, question, when people list their oldest finds, they will put "from machine". What machine or machines are we talking about?

Coin counting machines. Many bank lobbies have them, and some supermarkets have them also (you've probably seen the coinstar machines in supermarkets). Some coins like my 2 cent find were rejected from a coin counter and left in the "reject" bin by some unsuspecting fool.

Thanks. Interesting enough I ran into a guy that works for coinstar and learned a lot. He said always check the reject bin and always feel on top of the machine. He said he only cleans and services the machines and said a private company picks up the money ( ie. Brinks ) Neither he or the guys or gals from either are allowed to go through any of the coins. They could get fired. He also showed me a bag full with other junk that people have put into the machine, casino chips, medals, bottle caps that are collected inside another reject bin. He even has to turn all that in. He also said the machines would not take ( I believe ) pure silver, steel, or larger denomination coins. He personally has found 20 or better silver dimes in the reject bin. There is only one machine in my neck of the woods but I will always check it. Thanks again. ( I dump all my reject pennies into coinstar. It takes to long to roll them).

There is another possibility....DEALERS are having to dig a little deeper from their stash over the years. You might be VERY surprised at what dealers have in "the stash".

I have noticed several long time dealers selling their personal collections lately. I'm sure it has to do with age but there has been some nice fresh material coming to market

One dealer I know keeps a lot of his coins off display because he is waiting for them to appreciate more. It could be that they paid a little more for them (than they wanted) and a lot of these coins are now becoming profitable for them to sell.

Collectable coins are selling at bargain prices now, whether it be on ebay or from dealers. Everyone is into gold and silver value coins. Now is the time to zig when everyone else is zagging and selectively buy collector and variety coins. The Danester

With the economy, alot of people are selling grandpa's old coin collection. I'm seeing alot of stuff here locally , especially at the pawn shop.

This is one of the reasons lately for old coins appearing everywhere. Due to the economy, many people are taking coins to pawn shops, coin shows, coin stores and selling them. Also, some are just taking them to banks.
