I posted my classic head Half Cent in the 7070 picture thread and a question from Scooby Due here brought up this question http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...90172#747373 . I blew up the original picture and cropped this area out and it really looks like it may be the remnants of what is left after someone has whizzed the coin. This is what the coin looks like

and this is the area in question

So I need help to determine if this is what I think (whizzed coin) or if it is something else. Because if it is a whizzed coin then I have to replace it with another coin because my whole intent was to have the whole album problem free

Bryan,
IMHO, the surfaces are not original. Whizzed, maybe. I do believe the coin has been cleaned at some point.

If it is whizzed what would that drop the approximate value to?

I don't think it has been whizzed. Probably cleaned at one time and it might have a light coat of lacquer.

Didn't mean to throw you for a loop Bryan, I was trying to find a variety for that slot.

well I have been thinking about it and since some think the color is off meaning it has probably been cleaned and recolored, I guess I am going to change this coin in the album and will probably run a contest with this coin once I get another one for this slot (as I have done in the past with every other coin I have replaced in the album). I really hate it also because this was one of my favorite designs in the whole album (I am guessing because while searching for a problem free classic head large cent it made me appreciate them that much more)

That's still a sweet looking coin. Even if it doesn't fit your 7070 it should have a place in your collection.

I agree... I think it looks great but I don't think I could call it "problem free." While I'm definitely not an expert, it looks as though it were cleaned quite a while ago, and very nicely at that. There really aren't the classic whizzing marks that you could identify with.

SuperDave kind of has me wondering if it really could be Die Deterioration... I mean how good was QC in 1828 anyway?

It's still a beautiful coin IMO.

I agree with SuperDave, it looks like fairly typical Die Deterioration with none of the classic signs of whizzing. The color on the obverse is a little green but the color of your cropped reverse photos looks pretty good. Which color is more accurate?

I'm not an expert either, but it kind of reminds of what we often see with posted Lincoln Cent questions. More often than not, the answer is Die Deterioration.

If by Die Deterioration you mean the chipping around the lettering that is"die crumbling" and it is a form of Die Deterioration.

Numismatic verbiage is a game of precision, and Conder has the sharpest micrometer of all.

I didn't see any evidence of whizzing on the fields that you would expect to see either but I have heard some people can do it and you not know it was done. I have also heard that usually there is buildup around the devices where they have moved metal and didn't want to get right up against the devices of the coin and that is why I asked about possible whizzing. There is allot of personal things going on around here so it may not get swapped any time soon but it is on my to do list

When you do get around to the task, I have no problem helping you dispose of it.
