I have never really collected them, but I have acquired a few over my time as a collector. Just curious about how difficult / expensive it would be to assemble a complete (or near complete) set of V nickels.

I bought a nearly full roll of very circulated ones quite cheaply at a show today. After digging through them, it looks like I now pretty much have all of them from the late 1890s through the end of the run. I'm assuming that there are at least a few that are key dates in the series that would be expensive. Not sure if I want to continue on with this set or just have a roll of interesting nickels from the past.

Thanks!

It depends entirely on what technical grade you are striving for. The entire series is available with a reasonable amount of searching in average circulated grade ... that is ... there are no dates that are rare in the marketplace.

The majority of the set can be readily found in G4 to F12 condition for less than $10 each.

I'm aiming for a set in the XF40 to AU55 range ... here they become quite a bit more costly ... and much more difficult to locate in the marketplace.

The three key dates ... and Numismedia prices in F12 condition are ...

1885 @ $730
1886 @ $372
1912-S @ $190

Ive completed 3 sets over the years with virtually no problem, unless youre counting the 1913,which would make this set impossible to complete

I started a set about a month ago with the goal of XF40 wherever possible. I have 10 dates at that grade so far and purchased them at a somewhat modest cost but of course now it's getting more difficult. That's what makes coin collecting so interesting and challenging to me - looking for maximum quality at an affordable price.

This was the first set I completed. The grades are generally pretty low (probably averages about VG-8), but by being patient and shopping around, I got really good deals on the 3 keys:
1885 G-4 -- $150
1886 AG-3 -- $60
1912-S AG-3 -- $110

I am now 2 away (1886 & 1912-S), most are VF, a few XF, the 1885 is an AG3. To finish, I am hoping G4 in the 1886 and F12 in the 1912-s but I am picky about problem free coins.

1886 coins were going on ebay for about $75 in the Ag to G range about 8 months ago. It was kind of odd, I thought.

Thanks for all of the info. I think I'll definitely keep plugging away at this for a while. Most of the coins I have accumulated to far are probably in the AG / G range...maybe a little higher on a few. Seems like a fun set that I can play around with over time and not have to drop too much money until I get to the key dates. Thanks again!

I agree bwbollom... I was completing this and working on my Buffalo nickel herd at the same time, that way I could usually find some slot to fill in my price range. Now the V nickels are done and I only need a 1913-S Type II to finish the Buffaloes, so it's a little frustrating.

I started looking for these several months ago. I have found all but three out of dealers junk boxes
and paid less than a dollar each .. of course the three I still need are the 1885, 1886 and the 1912 S

I would say many of the later coins are in G-4 or better .. many of the earlier ones are AG-3

Very cool. I've never really looked for them before. Might have to start checking junk / low grade boxes more often.

if you leave out the one coin that you aint gonna get (1913) then this would be a fairly simple set to complete in my opinion even in ms grades. At least allot easier than some other sets anyway. If I were to like this design and was going to start a set I would probably go with AU+ condition just as I did with my dansco70780 album because I like to keep my sets with as much design still intact as possible and I really do not like the look of allot of the coins once they start getting worn, but this is just my preference and others prefer worn coins to uncirculated

I'm missing the "big 3 " also, my set was fairly inexpensive but the cost still keeps the "keys" out of my hands. My set average is VG

If you dont mind getting acid dated or details graded coins you can complete the set without spending more than $30 or $40 on the 1886.
