At my coin club meeting last night I bought a 2000 1/10th gold Eagle in the auction. On the cardboard holder, the seller had written "BU."

OK -- I'll give you the B, but U? Aren't they all U? Who spends gold bullion coins?

Actually there are some absurb story of people trying to spend such bullion coin. One of the most craziest story of I read from various forums is of how a boy spend a 1oz PLATINUM coin, yes let me repeat that again - 1 oz PLATINUM eagle coin who received it from his grandmother as a gift (appearently). The boy spent it with the face value of 100USD but of course the owner tried his best to explain it. Shocking as it seems to be but it happens!!!

well you have BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) or Proof (coins made for collectors) and it isn't really stating it hasn't been circulated just the process that was taken to create the coin itself, so even the mint will call a coin that is not a proof a "Uncirculated" coin because of the way it was minted with no special dies or pressure from the presses

BU was meant to distinguish it from proof, not to distinguish it from circulated condition.

The 1/10th Eagles are some of the nicest coins, IMHO. I have a 2001.
EDIT:
They are a easy collectible coin in terms of bullion because of their RELATIVELY low price(compared to say a Gold Buffalo) or a 1 troy oz. Eagle.

After I have all the ASE, I'm going to start @ 86, to present on the 1/10ths.

BU is a term used to describe condition,, PR is a term used to describe a form of minting process.

I have seen bullion coins that have been very very poorly taken care of thus lowering the value of the coin. While they will retain the precious metal value any collector value is diminished when they are allowed to get dirty as eye appeal to most collectors is very important.

I'm with Ranger on this. Putting together a set of 10ths sounds like a great idea. I may give it a go.
