This is why I love that NGC takes pictures of every coin they grade now and when you look up the cert you can see the picture of the coin and try to match them up to see if they look the same.

Now if only their pictures were better. And so far the only examples I have seen have been of the entire slab, you really couldn't tell much about the coin at all. The pictures need to be good quality pictures OF THE COIN! (And preferably take the picture of the coin BEFORE you put it in the slab.) It really doesn't matter what the slab looks like you NEED to be able to see the coin very clearly so you can make sure it matches the coin in the slab you are looking at in the marketplace.

I always like how people give NGC kudos for doing this. It's an idea they copied from Dominion Grading Service.

I think that's great for someone with a discerning eye AND experience enough to spot a fake.

That's why they need good quality pictures of the coin. You may not be able to tell that the coin in the slab your looking at is fake or not. But if the toning pattern or the marks on the coin in the slab don't match up with the pattern or marks in the NGC image then you KNOW something is wrong.

Oh for the love of all thats holy. If I was a newbie and was to go by what I read on this site about fakes, I would NEVER buy a single coin. I mean what I am getting from this and other similar threads is this: OH MY GOD! THE CHINESE HAVE FAKED EVERYTHING! THEY MADE OBAMAS BIRTH CERTIFICATE TOO!

Dont get me wrong, I understand there are fakes out there and one needs to be careful. But when you get to the point of saying you cant trust any slabs because the Chinese faked all of them, then we need to just give the hobby up. If I took this tack when it came to fossils, the only thing I'd be doing is going fishing.

And the Chinese have probably faked 10 lb bass too.

I find if you click the arrows down at the bottom right the picture is big enough to be able to see nicks and other features that can let you see if its the same coin or not. If you see nicks in one photo and do not see them in the other then chances are its a different coin. This is my VAM-85, one from my pictures and one that they took when it was graded

Even with poor quality pictures I think it is clear these are the same coin

Your coin is definitely real and there is no red flags or indications that would lead me to believe it to be counterfeit. It is a nice one. Congratulations on your new addition to your collection.

Bryan, The coolest thing about your VAM-85 is that it's used on the VAMworld.com web page. You gotta love it!
