Hello, I'm new when it comes to coin collecting when it's dealing with non modern coins but recently I've been really wanting a bust half dollar. I see a listing on ebay in a PCGS slab which I'm not sure if it's real or if the coin is real. I spent some time looking up information on the bust coins but it seems like it may be authentic. When I try to look up information on the counterfeit slabs vs. genuine slabs, My search came up with the genuine PCGS slabs looking like

Adam, Do you think they would slab a fake? I'm sure more than 1 person would look at this coin before slabbing.

But somebody could make a fake PCGS slab, look up the correct serial number and put a fake coin into the fake slab with the correct serial number. That is what you need to watch out for. I doubt that bust half is in a fake slab though.

Both coin and slab appear legit to me. Though if the coin was mine I wouldn't have spent the money to have it slabbed.

Remember that the PCGS logo is a hologram...it may look different depending at what angle the flash went off in.

I hate that we even have this discussion.... counterfeiters should get what is coming to them

I know that the Chinese were making fake NGC slabbed/numbered coins which copied legit serial numbers. The NGC site had a place where they showed how to tell a fake and a real. Not sure if the Chinese duplicated the PCGS slabs or not.

Yes they faked the PCGS slabs too and they did copy serial numbers from genuine slabs

Quote: Go to the PCGS website and punch in the serial # That does nothing any more because the counterfeiters got smart a few years ago when these slabs started hitting the market pretty hard, they now go onto heritage or TT or other online sites and find a coin of the same date and denomination and copy the serial number from that slab, so the serial number checks out for a coin of that date and the grade on the label so it looks legit. This is why I love that NGC takes pictures of every coin they grade now and when you look up the cert you can see the picture of the coin and try to match them up to see if they look the same. This is one area that PCGS has fallen short and are doping a great disservice to the end user for not following suite because it would all but end the fake slab scare that is running rampant throughout the collecting community

I never knew this. After I use my 8 free submissions form PCGS I will convert to NGC. That is great! Thanks Bryan

Thank you for all the replies, I still got alot to learn. I didn't buy it but If I find any other slabs, I'll be sure to have them be from NGC.

I think that's great for someone with a discerning eye AND experience enough to spot a fake. For the rest of us I think we're still pretty much at the mercy of the counterfeiters. From what I've read on the forum the Chinese have become extremely adept. The best advice I could give myself as a neophyte if I were buying a high priced coin would be to ask for opinons right here on CCF or (circumstances allowing) take it to 1 or 3 dealers for some opinions as to authenticity.
