Looks like a nice 1917 type 1 doesn't it. Well a closer look at the mint mark area may look different. This may shed some light. This has a little more detail. Does this look like a Grease Filled Die or some thing else? Here are a couple more images.

I don't know....the supposed mintmark is at the bottom right corner of the normal mintmark space. A real 1917-S I think would have the MM closer to the star. Here's a photo from a Heritage auction: The S is centered in the space on this PCGS-certified coin and it also appears much larger than the shape shown on the OP's coin. Besides, it would have to be an awfully precise filled die error to affect the mintmark alone. I think this is a Philadelphia coin.

I think its just an anomaly and not really a S mint mark because it doesn't look like its in the correct place to me. Someone can see S's all over that coin if you want to see them. Here are a few anomalies that look like an S to me

An S on that nice a coin would be more obvious, even if grease-filled.

I tend to agree with the naysayers from the photos. It does look like the placement would be close as comparison to my example, but I've never seen an "s" even close to being that weak, and almost all of the 1917 type 1s are extremely well struck with fresh dies. Have you tried looking at it from the angle of the "third side:, to see if any actual metal is raised into an "s" shape?

Jaobler here is another one (thank you Heritage) with similar mm placement to my ghost mm. Bryan1315 You are just a kill joy. You might even think they were Bs or something else. Biggfredd a guy can hope. johnny54321 I turned this coin every which way and could not find a third side, then I thought to look from the edge if I find any thing I let you know.

Quote: Bryan1315 You are just a kill joy I am sorry, the reason I said it was because I actually didn't remember where the MM was on the standing liberty and that one upper left of the date was the first thing I saw that looked like an S

You start seeing all sorts of things when you look at the pics so closely. I feel like I am looking for Waldo, lol.

I'm not seeing an S where the mint mark should be. I feel that it is the 1917 Type 1. If it were mint marked with an S there would be a definite raised shape there and there isn't.

Sorry, I am not seeing anything other than a standard 1917 T1.

I hope y'all enjoyed the search and thanks all for your comments.
