I have heard of people looking through pennies looking for pre-1982 cents for the copper. Now that I have done this, what shouldI do?
Rest in Peace

Keep them! Eventually the melt ban will be lifted and you'll be able to sell them for more than 3x face value; perhaps more. Copper demand is only going to grow and so will the price of copper. Think about all the 'crazy' people that saved silver dimes in 64. At the time, the silver in a dime was only worth 9 cents. Now they are the ones laughing all the way to the bank.

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only current legislation protecting coins is for pennies and non-silver nickels. The purpose was to make sure there was enough coinage in circulation to meet demand. As far as I know you can melt any silver coin (and even clad dimes and quarters if you were so inclined)

Keep them, but do not worry about the melt ban; treat them like copper bullion.

As biggfredd mentioned above, you can sell them ebay. You may be able to find a dealer, whether at a local shop or at a coin show, that would purchase them. Keep in mind that a dealer will pay less than a buyer on ebay.

Yeah, a dealer will probably pay less, but you also have to look at shipping costs, effort and time. It takes a bit of doing to securely pack a bunch of pennies. Also ebay and paypal fees. Check out http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm. You might be surprised at how little you'll make on them after everyone takes their cut. Do the math to see where you'll make the most.

I mentioned to my wife that I was looking at selling all the coppers we've been sorting and she about flipped when I told her we'd only make about $20 profit or so on $100 face. She then lectured me that we're keeping them until they are worth more. I love having a wife that's just as committed as I am

Actually it's pre-1983 Lincoln cents ... 1982 was a transitional year with mostly copper (87.8% by my numbers) and the end of the year was zinc production.

I'm roll searching cents for varieties so for me it's no worries to throw the copper in my old 5-gallon carboy ... if I ever get it filled then I'll worry about what to do with them.

Correct, but it is pre-1982 for those that do not feel like sorting the 1982 cents.

I guess I fall into that group right now. I have a container full of unsorted 1982 cents. Will they be flipped, balanced, weighed, or ran through a mechanical separator? I have no idea, but I am sure my son will be the one doing it. Some day.

Johny, if it is depressed into the metal. it is likely PMD (post mint damage) and not worth anything.
