So toning on Morgan's is typically from canvas bags (from what I understand), so should I shy away from a Morgan that has toning on both sides? It appears to be natural, but I'm not the best at this stuff yet.

Toning could be caused by all sorts of things. Coins used to be held a lot in paper envelopes, which contained sulfur, which would tone a coin. Or the folders (like Whitman albums) would tone the edge or surfaces of coins. And yes, canvas bags toned them also.

Learning how to spot a 'naturally' toned coin versus an 'artificially' toned coin takes some practice. To be on the safe side, if I were you, I would only purchase toned coins in PCGS or NGC holders to be sure of their authenticity.

Now there is also a camp, who would be technically correct, that believe ALL toning is damage to a coins surface, and they would shy away from a toned coin.

But the great thing about this hobby is you get to buy what you want and what you like.

I can kind of agree that all toning is damage technically, but I'll accept certain types :). I think I will be shying away from this coin unfortunately too because it's a nice one. Had it only been toned on one side I probably would have bought it too.

Not that I am any kind of expert, but that looks like a nice natural older toned Morgan to me.

I buy toned based on whether I like the way a coin looks and the price, regardless of whether it is natural or artificial, but I don't get too many artificial ones because they go for high prices lately and I will not pay up for them.

Likewise OTOH, there are some really ugly naturally toned coins I would never care to own

I've seen a few other pictures of this coin and the toning isn't as dark on them... But of course this picture best depicts the actual toning of the coin. I can imagine that in hand the cartwheel luster shows through and the toning isn't as strong. At least the other pictures lead me to believe that.

My thought process would be, if a coin is fully toned on both the reverse and obverse, it was done artificially.

This is my thought too, but only because that's what other people have told me. I'm not doubting these people because of their collections and knowledge, but I know some of my Jeffersons tone on both sides and I dont worry about them at all... They however, are usually stored in rolls and not canvas bags.

This coin doesn't have the neon colors that you typically see on the monster toned Morgans, but rather subdued colors in my opinion.

That is a beautiful coin and I would not hesitate to buy it. Toning is toning. And technically there is no such thing as artificial toning. I HATE that term. ALL toning is a NATURAL result of certain chemicals interacting with the metal of the coin. NOTHING artificial about it.

Now, if one wants to differntiate by saying accidental and purposeful toning, THAT would be an accurate distinction. And this coin looks to be accidental to me.

The toning on your Morgan is magnificent and authentic. There are many ways in which a coin can become toned and a canvass bag is just one of them. You should go ahead and purchase the coin. I guarantee that you won't regret it afterwards. I own several toned coins and am just as fascinated with them as when I first laid my eyes on them! Good luck.

I love the blues and green on it. I have a problem with toned coins, I like them all!
