OK, between the backlog of pennies, and my regular boxes of nickels, dimes and halves and my Buffalo nickel project, I'm starting to accumulate a lot of little stacks and piles and boxes and tubs of coins all over the place on all my tables and counters and any other semi-horizontal surface. I live in a small space and it's starting to get out of control. What I need is some system of drawers or bins for sorting and temporary storage which I can use until I am able to go through a group of coins and either return them to the bank or put them in rolls/tubes/flips/albums for longer term storage. Given that I'd like to limit the space consumed (something stackable would be nice), does anyone have any tips for things to use for storage and sorting?

I always like (and use) bank boxes that the coin rolls are shippied in.

maybe not what you are looking for, but I've recently been on a wire closet shelving installation spree.... I've learned some tricks for doing it fast, so I've put it all over every closet and laundry area we have. Just a thought!

Toolbox or tacklebox perhaps?

I need something smaller than the coin boxes from the bank, though I uses those for larger piles of coins already, and for storing rolls. Many piles, small space. Something like this maybe? Something like that would be nice because it's vertical and takes up less space but is easy to access. Or possibly those drawer things people use to store nuts and bolts and stuff. Just wondering what people use...

Good idea. This is the "nuts & bolts" storage container that I use in my garage.

The drawers might be nicer because I can pull them out while sorting, toss them back in when I'm done, rearrange them, label them, etc. Hmmm... I guess I'll go to the hardware store or someplace and take a look. Thanks.

For what it is worth, the one I show above comes from Lowe's (although mine are grey, not red). I am sure Home Depot and Ace have something comparable.

You could end this problem by simply sending me all your coins. No coins, no problems. Of course there are those Storage things they advertise on TV where you only pay $1 for the first Month. Some are 10' x 20' too. Or one of those Sears multi drawer tool cabinets. Myself, I gave up trying to not take up to much space with coins a long time ago. Collecting coins is like almost anything else. The more room you allow for them, the more you'll accumulate so it is sort of a never ending story. I've always wanted to win the lottery so I could buy a house with multiple rooms and have at least one for just coins. Imagine a possible 15 x 15 foot room with glass cabinets on all walls and full of coins.

Thank you for the generous offer, Carl, but mostly my problem is with organization. If you'd still like to help, how about I send you $100 in pennies, and you can sort them by date, mintmark and grade, then send them back to me in separate bags once I've got a proper storage system set up. Deal?

I ended up getting this: It didn't occur to me to make sure the plastic was a safe kind before I got it, but it turns out the drawers are polypropylene and the body is polystyrene which are both coin-safe AFAIK. No PVC anyhow.
