<vent> I couldn't sleep last night so I decided to hit the skids and watch the late night infomericals. I was about 2 in when I came across the Danbury Mint selling (for a limited time) the brand new "all-new State Quarters" because the old ones were no longer possible to collect as a complete set anymore. And you don't want to miss out on this opportunity do you? Now, they were clearly selling the America the Beautiful series which, I had thought, was always called the...well...America the Beautiful series at a GREAT PRICE for NEVER CIRCULATED COINS! Only 25 bucks (with shipping) for 12 dollars of NEVER CIRCULATED quarters because it's near impossible to find them this way by any other means. Anywho... I never heard them referred to simply as the "all-new State Quarters" before since I always just sorta referred to them by their name that the mint calls them--but after hearing them repeat it so many times I started to think (mind you this was about my 30th hour awake) that they may actually be right. Please tell me they're actually called the America the Beautiful Quarters...please? </vent>

Yes that's the actual name of the program. Also, the most popular unofficial name for them are the national park quarters.

so this is clearly just a selling ploy but why wouldn't they at least try to sell based off of national park sentiment or some such thing?
maybe I'm just way over thinking this.

Maybe I've heard them being refered to as "the all-new State Quarters" or a variation of that once or twice in passing, but yea this sort of sounds like a marketing ploy to sell them

I thought they were "new and improved" and that's why we were replacing the "old State Quarters".

Wasnt there a law suit by the mint claiming that they were the only ones that could use the "America The Beautiful" term when referring to these quarters? Perhaps that's why the Danbury mint didn't refer to them as such.

I stopped collecting quarters when they started with those park things.

I can understand why you have stopped justcarl. Even though I collect the National Park quarters, I feel the Mint could have come up with something much more creative and innovative. It feels like the State Quarter series hasn't ended. My personal opinion would have been put the Presidential series on the quarters, because right now the Presidental series is getting forgotten as the Mint keeps adding stockpiles of these coins and they continue to collect dust.

okiepb: If there was a lawsuit my extremely quick google search didn't turn it up. But, even so, if that's what the mint calls them why can't anyone else? ie. give something a title and you can't really prevent other people from using that title. just_carl: I dunno, I really didn't like the State Quarters all that much but for some reason I'm digging the "all-new State Quarters". Probably more because of a sentimental national park feeling on my part then an actual "these are stellarly designed coins" part. wulffy11: I like that Presidential Quarter idea! I understand the educational value that may be associated with having parks, states, etc. on quarters but having the presidents on there could, you know, maybe actually teach some folks who the presidents were. It seems like since dollars are primarily a very specialized niche you could have some really specialized design on there while having a more broad design on coins that actually get the bulk of circulation. But...that's just my IMO.

The problem is probably because the Mint has a Registered Trademark for the name " America the Beautiful Quarters" and they may have told the TV/Danbury Mint people they couldn't use it. We use it all the time and the Mint doesn't put up any fuss, but since it is a registered Trademark they can order anyone to stop using it if they choose and take them to court if they do. Quote: Only 25 bucks (with shipping) for 12 dollars of NEVER CIRCULATED quarters because it's near impossible to find them this way by any other means. Twelve dollars of quarters? Is that $12 worth of each park for $25 each or $12 total for all the parks? Because $12 for all the parks works out to $2.40 per park. Which park gets shorted?

I am not one to interpret legal things but I am under the impression that there could actually be a second go around with the National Parks type theme for all the states when this one is finished. Finally I think they end up with the old obverse with a reverse of Washington crossing the Delaware River. I read the Quarter Dollar Act of 2008It says this within the Act. ``(7) Period of issuance.-- ``(A) In general.--Subject to paragraph (2), the program established under this subsection shall continue in effect until a national site in each State has been honored. ``(B) Second round at discretion of secretary.-- ``(i) Determination.--The Secretary may make a determination before the end of the 9-year period beginning when the first quarter dollar is issued under this subsection to continue the period of issuance until a second national site in each State, the District of Columbia, and each territory referred to in this subsection has been honored with a design on a quarter dollar. You know, I don't have that many fingers and toes to figure out how long it will be but I bet it goes past 2032 at this rate until Washington Crosses the Delaware River comes out. The Washington quarter will be over 100 years old as it began in 1932. What might be wrong with an Act like this is that it goes way too far into the future with planning. Things do change and I think a twenty plus or thirty plus year commitment to staying with a design is far too presuming.

Condor,
I believe it's 12 bucks of quarters per park for 25. Sorry, I should have specified earlier.
Wheezy,
Oh man, I hope they don't go through another round...
et al.
Granted, I'm no lawyer so take this with a grain of salt but...I still don't see how having a trademark on a product would prevent someone who is selling such a product from using that name. I mean, on one hand you allow a middleman to sell your goods but then, on the other, you refuse to let them refer to your goods by the name you gave them? You know? I'm probably just completely messed up on this but this seems like craziness.
Does anyone know if there were any other trademarked names coming from the mint? Were the Westward Journey nickels trademarked?
