The shadow line demarks a distinct change in contour of the field. Is this die wear? (vs die clash or struck through... what else?) ....added second photo marked up for clarity.... (thanks for comments in advance) Edited by Changeless 06/28/2011 8:02 pm

I have seen many of those and I think it's a worn die. John1

To me it looks like a clash (or a clash that was badly polished and the side of the memorial was still visible...if you imagine the raised part of it...it is the side of the memorial imo...anyone else?

I see your idea... I think you are saying this could be the result of a polished "repaired" die clash. (unrepaired, would have seen a sharper edge, right?) The shape and location fits your clash idea. Floating Die Clashes are known for this mintage. And... THERE IS a much fainter and much shorter "ridge" in about the right location on the other side... or it is just my imagination? (I couldn't catch it in an image... but should have mentioned it). What else could I look for? Would there be other markers? What say you all about Jayman931's thoughts?

I am pretty new to this...I am definitely not an expert. There would be other coins similar to it you could compair its markers. I really wouldn't have anything else to add. My 2 cents were used up..lol

I would think it is die abrasion to cover a clash outline of the memorial. Die deteriation happens to dies that show wear around the devices. Die abrasion is the polishing to remove die clashes.

"Abrasion" ... that's the term I should have used earlier (not "polished") Is there any "premium value" in this situation, assuming that is what it is... a damaged die (clash) repaired by the mint?

Contra Coop's statement, Die Deterioration can take many forms, including deformation of the field. That's what you're seeing here.
