based on the lettering, I think its an 1858 small letter variety

It's hard to believe that all the other lettering is so plain and, the date wore off like that. But, I would agree with 1858 small letters.

just looks like wear to me, around 8 o'clock the wear is greatest, then counter-clockwise it shows gradually less wear.

Or someone purposely erased the date.

Struck with a clogged die. It is not wear because the rim is still complete at the date(denticles are visible too) and the date has not been mechanically effaced either because the metal where the date should be has not been disturbed. It would be a nice F/VF coin if it had the date but unfortunately, that really kills the value IMO.

So, what is it worth like this then?
Thanks

Write "1856" on it with a black felt tip marker, and throw it on ebay to see what happens... (just kidding btw)

Add me to the 58 SL group. I am not so sure its a clogged die. As was pointed out it is very worn at the beak and going counter clock wise from there. The denticles ARE still there, but you can see they are more worn where at the top they are crisp and well defined. I am going to go with bad wear on that one section. Like someone carried it for a while as a lucky penny and would rub on it.

I should have added the reverse. It shows wear above "one cent". I guess the rubbing theory might be right. Either way...I'm thinking about selling it and a few other coins to get me a better one. I have no clue what would be a decent price to ask.
Any thoughts?

Good is 30 bucks. Not sure how that one would grade. Top half is fine or so. Bottom is AG due to the wear and no date. I would give you about 2o or so if I was buying it. With no date I just couldn't justify paying more.

It has very nice surfaces and at least F surfaces. I would say $15.
