Hello everyone, first time poster but long time reader. These george v nickles are tough to grade, so I thought I would get everyone's opinion. The mark on the '28 at 10 o'clock is actually a piece of cardboard from the folder in which the coin is sitting. Edited by tfred 07/07/2011 8:16 pm

To the forum and thank you for posting such beautiful pictures of your coins. 1928 what can I say, the toning is great, not too sure what the mark is on the rim at 10 0 clock but a keeper at MS-63 plus.. 1926 Far, some nice toning, but brought down with some ware, I would say close to AU.. 1925, a nice coin, shows some ware and a few bangs and nicks maybe an EF-40.. All in All a sweet collection.

Nice coins. Simply impossible to grade this series from pictures. If the 28 has uninterupted luster, it may get a 63. VF and VF for the other 2. Again, nice coins.

1928 MS64 1926far VF25 1925 VF30
I think all are very nice coins. I have a set of these Canadian nickels and keep improving it as I get the chance. Recently I got all the proofs from 1996 on up since they are made of .925 silver. It brightens up the set nicely. I am debating on getting as many proof like coins and other proofs and including those. I also have a nice small cent set. So many varieties to find.

Interesting how the 26 far ranges from AU to VF. According to Charton, VF20 Very Fine- The central bands, jewels, and pearls are worn away. On the 26 far you can clearly see the central band, jewels, and pearls. So how would that grade as a VF? I'm not argueing, I'm just trying to hone my grading sills on the nickels. (George V nickels are the hardest to grade ,IMO)

tfred,I think that's a typo in Charlton's If you look on the same page you'll see, F12...."central crown bands, with jewels and pearls are 50% worn away"... GeorgeV nickels are rife with strike issues and internet grading is just a ballpark estimate without the coin in hand for these

1928 - MS-63 1926 EF-40 1925 VF-30 This series is a gold mine for anyone who frequents shows or flea markets etc. It is tough to grade and lustre is the dominant thing to look for. I've sent lots of George V nickels to ICCS that have come back AU-55 to MS-63 that don't have all eight pearls showing but they dazzle. The better the lustre, the better the grade. I was at the Kingston show a few months back and one dealer had a group of George V nickels as part of his display. He had them all marked VF-20 or VF-30. I scooped them. Beautiful coins and they were obviously much higher in grade. Lustre wins in this series.

I concur with tamarin, this is a very tough series to grade, but once your eye is into the lustre, the sharpness of the rim and reverse details, you can still pick some good cherries, albeit weakly struck. I recently took a trip to New England, and bought a sweetheart 1922 5c coin, the dealer marked and priced it AU-50, and I am convinced is it at least MS-63. It will be added to the pile headed for a TPG.
