From the coin show visit this morning. My first Mercury dime purchase. I think it is BU Full Bands (that is what I was aiming for). Please let me know if I was on or off target - either way, I really like this one, and as usual, my images don't live up to the coin in hand (will work on that next week-end). Edited with better picture of reverse...just noticed squiggle line in image - that would be Golden Retriever hair! Edited by CoinsKelly 07/10/2011 2:34 pm

Looks at least BU to me. Note that I am a novice grader.

Full Band for sure and I would say BU. However I'm a novice too. Beautiful Coin

OK, I will take a leap here, I think MS64 or very strong MS63 with FB. I think the cheek holds it back from 65. I paid $20 for it. Additional comments?

Like I said before I'm a novices I do see the spot on the cheek. is that wear? Thanks for pointing that out. I'm trying to get better at grading and I drop in an try to grade peoples coins that they post and I dont want to offend anyone. I have been spending most of the day trying to grade my own coins.

Maybe it is the lighting, but why do the horizontal bands look so different from the rest of the reverse. If I turn my eyes from the monitor and then swing them right back, the bands stand out as different from the other elements of the fasces? At first glance they appear to be re-engraved. Just appears very odd to me as usually they are similar to the angled and vertical portions. Jim

I will try to take some pictures sideways, please stay tuned and thanks for the input (I don't think they are engraved but I am new to this series)

I have the feeling that the sharpness of the bands is due to them being where the camera focused - the depth of field is insufficient to get all of the coin in focus, and that's where the camera chose since that's probably the part which is physically closest to the sensor. It's not really valuable enough to warrant the effort of engraving Full Bands.

DJ, don't be afraid to say a grade, this is a great place for learning and members discuss disagreements well. I believe the cheek is a bag mark, which wouldn't neccesarily put it below MS, but from what I have read would top it out at 64. I don't believe the band are engraved because in hand, the metal seems to have flowed into the bands. But, I would really like better pictures of the bands to make sure so I am reviewing other posts (thanks to hambones discussion today) to work on my photography. I will repost pictures at a later date and hope everyone on this thread chimes back in. Cheers!

MS state. I don't think it will hit a MS-65, I think it will go to around a 63. Nice example!!

I think its hard to tell from the photos. It looks to have more detail than my MS66, BUT mine doesn't have FB so I would say that would have to be because of the die. It does look MS62-63 at least. But dont feel bad, these things are so small they are hard to take pictures of. When I showed mine off I had to Use the ebay photos lol

I don't believe it has been engraved. And the cheek is a bag mark. Which willkeep the grade down. The fields look clean and the bands clearly full. MS-63 or 64

Something isn't sitting right with me...The Middle is sharp but all of the edge details are soft...the bands on the reverse are clean but the up and down parts are soft and blurry....bad pic...or bad strike or cleaned...Im far from a reliable grader...just my thoughts

The image is not great, I used a scanner. In hand, the detail on the reverse is very good but appears blurry after the bands in the image. I will figure out how to do it with a camera and repost.

CoinsKelly, Hope you don't mind, but I took the top of your photo and placed it next to a PCGS MS-67 FL photo so we could look at both. If you want me to remove this, just let me know. Both coins are 1941-D.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
